MAY, 1978; EDDIE
"See, that's where I'm gonna live one day, Eddie." Chance pointed at the television. She was sat on the couch with me, her legs bent up to her chest. We held ice cream cones in our hands, eating away at them as we watched some summery film play on the screen in front of us. "Right there, California. Don't it look so pretty?"
A beach scene was happening. Filled with beautiful fine sand, girls drinking lemonade, and guys playing volleyball. The ocean lapped at the movie stars's ankles, dragging away mucky sand with each wave that splashed onto his tanned skin.
"Eh...it's alright." I mumbled, sucking up the melty bits of ice cream that dripped off the side of my cone.
Chance had said that's where she'd live. She usually always jokingly said we when referring to something she wanted to do, but not this time. She said that she'd live there. I wasn't included.
"Are you crazy?" She scorned, sliding over to lay against my chest. "California's the most beautiful place on earth!"
"No, but you are. Get offa me." Pushing her back onto her side of the couch, I settled back into my place. "It's too hot." It was hot. I wasn't lying about that.
She was in a tank top and we both wore shorts. However, I opted out of the shirt entirely. Sweat beaded my forehead, dribbling down my skin in fat big rolls.
What I was lying about was that it was too hot for Chance to lay on me. That wasn't true. I just didn't want her to. Not after what she said. It was so minuscule. It could've been an honest slip up but nevertheless my little boy ego had been wounded.
"What's wrong with you?" Wrinkling up her face, she set herself back to lay on me. She shrugged off my rude gesture and acted like nothing had happened at all.
The movie star on screen was nearing the girl he liked. His gaze was locked onto her, slowly stroking her hair and face. I glanced down at my chest, Chance pressing her back against it again.
She was swooning stupidly at the dreamy guy in the film, her eyes sparkling at the screen. The movie star leaned down to kiss his girl at the same moment I smashed the top of my ice cream against her cheek.
Cold rocky road hit Chance's skin. She jumped out of my touch, her fist around her own cone. Her face was turning cherry red.
"Jerk!" She wiped at the splotch of chocolate ice cream with her hand. The people on screen were stupidly making out. "What'd you do that for?!" Giddiness rushed into me, coursing through my blood. A smile creeped up my lips.
"I told you it was hot."
"Oh, yeah?" Chance sneered, turning her ice cream upside down to mush it into my hair. "There. That might cool you down, you little dip!" She was triumphant, proud that she got me back. Cookie dough ice cream dribbled down my scalp.
Taking one last lick of my cone, I shot my hand out and did the same to her. We were both cone heads then. Not just one of us. Thee comes fell off quickly, leaving us with goopy ice cream in our hair.
"Say I can go to California with you." I demanded, crawling across the couch. My hands we're outstretched, reaching for her stomach. "Say it, Chance."
