APRIL, 1978; CHANCE

"Oh, I can't wait to have my first kiss." I gushed, a marvelous daydream swirling in my head as Romeo and Juliet's lips touch on the television.

I had decided on Romeo and Juliet when Eddie and I were at the video store, blushing as I handed it to the cashier. I was going through the next stage of my girlhood. The stage where I got all starry-eyed at cheesy romance, swooning at the smallest thing.

I started getting crushes. First, I had one on a seventeen-year-old lifeguard, Andrew Fields.
Eddie and I frequented the community pool a lot during that time.

Then there was John Travolta after seeing Saturday Night Fever. Not to mention Marty Jefferson, Darryl Taft, and Harry Fuller. Though I'd never tell, I definitely harbored more than platonic feelings for Denise Bloom.

Of course, Eddie had dealt with all my ranting and raving about each of them. He'd lend an ear whenever I needed, listening to hours and hours of my babbling. Today, however, he had enough with the listening and decided to talk.

"Why do you have to wait?" He asked, making me turn toward him on the couch. "Just have it already. Then you'll finally stop talking about it."

"Well, I don't have no one to kiss me." Moping around, I settled my chin in the palm of my hand. My focus was shifted back to the movie.

"I'll kiss you," Eddie said nonchalantly, grabbing a handful of popcorn from the bowl in his lap. "As long as we never talk about kissing again and turn on Rocky Horror."

"My first kiss has to be with someone I like!" I reeled back at him, throwing popcorn in his face. "Not you!"

"What, you don't like me?" He picked a stray piece of popcorn out of his hair, popping it into his mouth. "I thought we were friends."

"Well, of course, I like you, Stupid." Lightly kicking his leg, I continued. "Why else would I be here all the time? You're my best friend."

"Then what's the problem?" Speaking with boyish ignorance, he rolled his eyes at me. "Just...I don't know...dare me to kiss you and then it'll be out of the way and I won't have to listen to you talk about it anymore."

My little heart racing like a rabbit's, I blurted it out impulsively. "Fine. I dare you to kiss me."

"Alright, then." Eddie grabbed the remote, pausing the movie. "Now we're getting somewhere." Wiping his hands off on his jeans, he scooted closer to me on the couch. "Ready?"

"I guess so." Hesitancy crept into me as he drew closer. My best friend was inches from my face. Eddie's eyes shone like wet earth, his lashes fluttering as he leaned in.

My wishes of first kisses and happily ever afters came to a halt when I yelped just as he was about to kiss me. Rolling off of the couch, I landed in a mess of dirty laundry laying on the floor.

"Well, what'd you do that for?!" His face split into a grin, button nose twitching. "I thought you wanted me to kiss you."

"I changed my mind." My lungs filled with crowds of butterflies, coughing themselves up on my tongue. His eyes glinted playfully as he stood up from the couch. "Eddie, I changed my mind!" I shrieked, bolting from the scene.
