That's when I saw the bracelet dangling on my wrist. Shiny diamonds were twinkling right at me, gorgeous but very misplaced considering that I had never seen it in my entire life.
A strange man called out my name. "Chance, look this way!" The camera he held snapped a shot of me and produced an exuberant amount of light.
Several other cameramen shouted at me, taking a litany of unsolicited pictures while beckoning me to look their way.
"No, here!"
"Over here!"
"Chance! Chance! C'mon, give us a smile! A quick one!"
An army of people surrounded me, at least two hundred, very possibly many more. There was a velvet rope that was separating them from me. The bracelet I wore was not the only finery I had on. A tight bejeweled red gown clung to my body. It pushed up my breasts which had a diamond necklace mantling above them.
I was wearing high heels that were more expensive than I had ever touched and from the way my hair was styled in generous curls, the brown color had vanished. Someone had made me a buttery blonde.
Glancing down, I saw what I stood on. A red carpet that didn't seem to have a foreseeable end. It just kept going and going until it turned a corner. No one else walked it. Only me.
Where on God's green earth am I?
I know one thing for sure.
This place ain't no Hawkins...
And it sure as hell ain't no Texas. The scent of the place lifted my nose. It was heavenly, smelling of salt and seawater. A chill had set itself over my body yet I wasn't cold, rather I felt remarkably refreshed. This was California weather. I knew for damn sure. I was a bloodhound for any reminiscent waft of the place.
Raucous cries for my attention brought my attention back to the crowd. Photographers weren't the only ones on the sidelines anymore. Men, women, boys, and girls were there clamoring for my attention. Everyone wanted me. They held posters and autograph books. Every single person was chanting my name. My name.
If this is a dream it sure is a marvelous one.
Delight beamed down on me. Without another thought, I stepped forward, a rehearsed intention present in how my heel pierced the plush carpet. I straightened my posture into a poised position. My manicured hand fell onto my hip oh so naturally.
All of my muscle memory had kicked in. I had practiced this hundreds of times before. I had planned every pose and micro-expression in my bedroom, picturing an adoring group of admirers falling at my feet just like this.
I allowed hurled compliments and flattery to wash over me. My body warmed and relished in this many people's pure adoration. The ego I had swelled enormously, receiving more of its fair share of fill.
"It's nice, isn't it?" Someone growled frighteningly from behind me. I jumped at this, not given time to flip around before a mottled red hand rested on my bare shoulder. "Relax, Chance. No need to scare, look at what I have provided you."
