"Coal creek west Virginia" The sign read as my car drove by while I was half asleep. I was moving to coal creek with my mom after she divorced my dad. She thought it was a fresh start but she also wanted to show me where she grew up.
My mom lived in coal creek as a kid and she still had a light southern accent from when she was a child. She moved to New York with her mom and dad when her mom got a promotion for work.
My dad was what you would call an abusive drunk, he would usually smash things when he was drunk or when he was sober but angry. He was also bipolar which means his mood can change really fast in the matter of seconds.
I didn't mind moving I liked meeting new people but I also had trouble trying to make friends in the past. I have been bullied in my old school and it was pretty brutal to the point I fell into depression. I didn't have much friends either, I had a close friend and friends who I would talk to during class but that was it. I couldn't go to them for comfort when the bullying got bad. I didn't want to put my problems onto others so I decided I wouldn't talk about it to any of my friends so that I wouldn't be a burden.
A few minutes passed and I started to see houses in the distance, the houses looked very old and small. Something about this neighbourhood made me feel surprisingly comforted and I was excited to see what the people were like as well.
Suddenly, we pulled into the driveway of a small house it was in much better shape than most of the other houses, and the inside was warm and safe like this was where I was supposed to live my whole life.
"Amazing isn't it?" My mom asked putting her hands on my shoulders to relax them. She had a big smile on her face which made me happy to know that she was happy to be here.
"It really is amazing I love it mom" I jumped with a huge smile on my face wrapping her into a hug."We should go get the boxes from the car and start making this place feel like home." My mom suggested as she started walking out of the door me following close behind. Even though there was no furniture in the house just yet it already did feel like home and I knew we made the right choice moving here. The only thing I was worried about was the people and if they were as nice as I am expecting them too be.
I started bringing in the less heavy stuff since my arms are weak and there is no way that i would be able to carry a box as heavy as an elephant full of furniture into the house just yet.
"Our new neighbours seem to need some help with those boxes, Arvin why don't you be a dear and go help them out." Emma suggested her voice croaky and dry as she was unwell and old.
Arvin knew that it was the right thing to do, and decided to listen to his grandma. He finished off his cigarette and threw it on the ground stepping on it with his foot to kill the rest of the smoke escaping from it.
He walked to the house where he saw me trying to bring in a heavy but easy enough to hold box full of furniture.
"Hey need any help?" A southern raspy voice came from behind me. I turned around to be met with a guy with a denim cap, denim jacket, white t-shirt and denim jeans. His outfit clearly had a denim sort of theme since he seems to be wearing a lot of denim.
"Um yes, thank you that is very kind." I smiled earning the same kind smile back from him. "well, I'd rather be on my couch watching old cartoons like road runner but my grandma suggested I help you, since it is the nicer thing to do and as the gentleman I am I did so and here I am." He chuckled earning a laugh from me. To be honest he looked kind of scary and like what you would call a ' bad boy' but when he cracked a joke it was far from the truth.
He took the box I was holding from my hands and walked into my house and placed it on the ground with all the other boxes.
I smiled too myself as I grabbed another box and placed it on the ground in the house. It was small and had barely anything in it and as I held it I could hear the guy who I yet to know his name laugh at how I could only hold such little weight.
"Hey, It's not my fault I don't have strong muscles like you I am just a girl after all." I joked playfully. "Ohhh, so you get guys like me to carry stuff that you can't when it's too heavy I see how it is.." He said with a smug look on his face. It was fun how I could joke around with this guy when I just met him, it was easy and I would like to call us friends.
"Hey, I didn't get your name?" I asked actually interested in his name as I wanted to get to know him more and maybe become friends.
"It's Arvin Russell!!" He shouted from inside the house placing the last box down. He came out of the house with a big smile on his face. The name matched him and his personality very well. "I didn't catch your name, what is it?" He said now interested in what I had to say. " Jade Willow." I said proudly.
"That's a nice name Jade." He said making me smile.
It matches you. he thought.
