"Sir, the thruster coils are at core temperature. Molecule Re-arrangement system running at satisfactory levels."reported a nervous intern.
"What do you mean satisfactory?" boomed an authoritative voice, adding to the noise of the room buzzing feverishly, with mechanical arms assembling machines and super computers calculating like there was no tomorrow-Justifying the building being a Chrono-Research Laboratory.
"It's my life that's on the line, Gordon, I don't want to end up like Stephen Hawking after an improper Hyper-Time Jump." said the test subject-slash-lead researcher, trying to be humorous but visibly suppressing his agitation and tension.
"Sorry Sir, I'll get them to the desired capacity immediately." replied Gordon, the intern, apologetically.
From other side of the room, a relatively calmer and composed voice called out " Relax Seb, they are not gonna find out about this." It was Mitchell Kessler, the second-in command and long time friend of Seb.
"Oh, I hope you're right Mitch, the last time the Time Infringement Commission found out we had the Chrono-Transporter online, they destroyed nearly half the complex and sued us on the grounds of treason."
"But that was 3 years ago, and they don't have the slightest idea that we have completed re-building the time machine and are gonna travel back to 2034 to prevent..."
"It's The Chrono-Transporter, Mitch" interrupted Sebastian Dawson, the chief scientist and researcher of the lab, who had been the pioneer in the field of Chronoscience in his prime."
"I've told you not to call it that! You make it sound like a science project and..."
Before he could complete, Gordon blurted out: "We have a perimeter breach! Sir! The T.I.C is here!! Boot up the machine! Quickly!! They will be here any second now!!"
"Oh, Here we go again! I had a feeling this would happen. This time they are going to get us at least 10 years in jail. Darn it! How could they know?!"
"Seb, all these years of planning can't be wasted in vain. You need to make the Time Jump. I'll buy you some time" said Mitch, as he initiated the opening of the time portal.
"Are you serious? You are in the T.I.C's good books! Don't tarnish that reputation!" debated Sebastian.
Starting the lockdown, Mitch explained his actions: "I might as well make new enemies than lose old friends, Seb. I'll buy you some time, now GO! "
Seconds before Mitch could hit the lockdown facility button, the T.I.C personnel intervened and took the situation under their control, and shot several rounds at Seb as well as the machine. His body was found at the foot of the portal.
Later that night, the other scientists present at the scene reported that they had seen the Doppelganger effect take place just when the portal opened. As the portal emitted a lot of light, Seb's body was seen being shot dead and falling down, but at the same time, a second silhouette, was seen entering the portal before it was force-closed by the T.I.C....
