Chapter 14: Family Dinner

I never knew my family. Sure, I spent past summers with my mother's parents in their house in the Hamptons, but my parents either brought me along on their busy publicity tours or kept me at home with a nanny. Even when they took me on their tours around the world, they were too busy working on their movies at the time and never had the time to take me sightseeing. I was always thankful for leaving me alone with my friends or current boyfriend at the time. As I got older and started to land roles of my own, I was too busy over summer break or was traveling with my friends to spend time with any other extended family I had. By that time, I never really considered my family a real family.

"Skye, your boyfriend is here," Madelyn calls to me in the living room, groaning afterwards. I invited Ethan over for dinner tonight and Madelyn is grouchy because her boyfriend Dylan was supposed to come over. I have got the impression that Dylan is not well-liked in this house because my parents were quick to choose Ethan over Dylan. Truthfully, I originally didn't invite Ethan over for dinner. I invited him over to work on homework. But then my mom practically jumped at the chance to entertain. So now dinner is for six now, since Maggie also invited herself over for dinner.

"Okay thanks," I say, heaving myself up from the couch and answering the door. When I throw open the door, my heart melts a little. There he is, looking gorgeous as ever in his blue trailblazer shirt and long khaki pants. He looks even more gorgeous than any guys that walk the red carpet every night. I want to wrap my arms around his tanned and broad-shouldered frame. Which I do.

"Whoa there babe," he whispers in my ear, surprised. "Easy there." Five words. That's all it takes for my knees to break in awe.

Swoon.

"I am so glad you are here," I whisper back. "Beware of my mom's vegetable soup. She's not the best chef but don't bring it up-she'll flip on you and give you a lecture on how she works all the time and has no time for cooking." He throws his head back and laughs, showing off his cute ass dimples. I give him a stern look. "I'm not kidding." He immediately stops laughing. "She will lecture you no matter who you are."

"I'm sure her cooking is fine," he shrugs it off. I warned him.

"Honey, dinner is ready!" my mom exclaims brightly as she enters the main foyer where we're standing. "Oh, Ethan, right on time!" She throws her hands up in delight.

"Good evening, Mrs. Mackenzie!" Ethan greets politely, unhooking his arms locked around my waist to wrap his arms around my mom's thin frame. "Thank you so much for having me over." He pulls something from his other hand. "And this is for your family, I hope you like it. My mom wouldn't let me leave the house unless I had something to bring over." My mom gasps in surprise. In Ethan's hand is wrapped white roses and a box of chocolates in the other. Flowers and chocolate. How sweet. I want to kiss him. No. I want to do more than just kiss him. Soon my father joins the party in the main foyer and we're all facing each other. Just got awkward. Ethan sidesteps to stand next to me. "And good evening to you, sir." Ethan firmly reaches out to shake Dad's hand.

"Always a pleasure to see you, Ethan," my dad welcomes warmly. "With Skylar, I might add." He winks at me. I blush.

"Yes, yes, we're all so happy for this pleasurable little reunion," Madelyn rolls her eyes as she enters the foyer, "now can I go over to Georgie's?" She grabs her purse. "Mindy too." She shoots a glare towards Ethan, and then an apologetic smile towards me. I understand that out of best friend code, she has to hate the ex-boyfriend. She already talked it over with me. We're cool with each other.
