chapter 17

Kit is coming over today and meeting Este's family. Her brother is there for dinner so she thought it would be a good idea to do it today. It's a little early, but they are official so why not just do it already?

When Kit comes in he hands her a bag of croissants and kisses her cheek. He has a white shirt on with a jean jacket. His hair is done and Este is basically melting at how he looks.

"You look so pretty right now" she says honestly.

"Ahw that so sweet of you love. You also look very pretty."

"You don't have to say that just because I said it to you."

"No you do look beautiful" Kit says as he takes both her hands in his and kisses her softly. Seconds later the doorbell rings.

"That'll be my brother" Este says as she goes to open the door. A boy who looks a lot like her but older appears at the door. Both of them say hello to each other and hug. She hasn't seen him in a long time. He doesn't even know Kit exists.

"So Kye I want to introduce you to someone, this is my boyfriend Kit."

They shake hands and introduce themselves to each other. After a while of small talk Este and Kit go upstairs. They lay in bed cuddled up for the rest of the afternoon until it's time to eat dinner.

"I'm a little nervous not gonna lie."

"No! Why would you be nervous? They are just humans just like us."

"Well they are your family and I want them to like me. What if they don't?"

"I don't see any reason why they would dislike you. You're the nicest person ever."

"Are you sure they will like me?"

"A honderd procent."

They walk downstairs together and take a seat at the dinner table. The food looks good and her family look like nice people.

"So you must be Kit! I heard a lot about you" Este dad says.

"Yep, that's me."

The conversation starts off a bit awkward but that soon fades as they talk about Heartstopper together. Este's parents are very interested in everything and Kye is just a good listener.

"So how does all of that work? I mean, isn't it very hard to shoot a series?"

"It can be hard but it's also really fun. Especially when you have a cast that are actually friends. On set it was a very comfortable environment which also made you more able to try out different things."

"What character do you play?" Kye asks, joining in.

"I play Nick Nelson. He is the popular boy and falls in love with one of the less popular boys called Charlie Spring. He figures out his sexuality and finds his own friend group where he can be way more comfortable then in the one he was before."

"So your character is gay?"

"No he is bisexual so he likes both genders."

"Isn't it weird to play a gay character when you are straight yourself? I would never be able to do that."

Este looks at Kye angrily and he just rolls his eyes.

"Well I'm unlabelled myself, but even if I was straight I think it wouldn't be a hard thing. What's the difference between two guys being in love or a guy and a girl."

"What's being unlabelled?"

"It's that you don't label your sexuality and just like whoever you want to like" Este says before Kit can say anything. She gives him a reassuring smile letting him know she is there for him.

"That's really weird. Just choose what you are. From what i've heard there are enough sexualities you can be."

"You don't get to just choose your sexuality, Kye. You are born that way and if Kit or anyone else doesn't want to label theirs that's their choice and you should just have to live with that."

"And you wanna be with someone like that Este?"

"Kye!" Este's mother says slapping his leg.

"What?"

"Where is your respect, son! He doesn't even owe you anything and he still opens up to us and you react like that" Este's father says with an angry tone in his voice.

"You know I'll just leave then. You guys already like him way more than you have ever liked me."

Kye is out the door before anyone can say anything else. There is an awkward silence left and to say Este feels guilty is an understatement. He was already scared of meeting her family and now this had to happen.

"I'm very sorry Kit, he is just not that flexible and tends to overreact often" Este's mother says.

"You don't have to apologize, it's not you guys fault. Thank you for sticking up for me."

"Of course, Kye had no right to talk to you like that. It was disrespectful and we do not tolerate that behavior, even if it's our own son."

"Me and Kit are going upstairs if you two don't mind" Este says as she stands up.

"That's alright."

Before they leave Kit compliments her mom on how good the food was. They return to Este's room and sit down on her bed.

"I'm so fucking sorry babe. Kye was being an absolute asshole to you which you didn't deserve."

"Why are you sorry? It's not your fault."

"It is because I said everything would be alright and you shouldn't worry about it. Then something like this happens. I knew Kye always had his own opinions but I didn't think he would be homophobic. I'm so disappointed in him right now."

"Este it's fine. I'm used to people saying stuff like that. It's just because they don't understand it."

Este takes his hands in hers and makes direct eye contact with Kit showing that she really means it.

"You shouldn't be used to people getting disrespectful when it comes to your sexuality. It's something people should just accept and not make a big deal about. What Kye did tonight wasn't fine. Even if you sy it is you know yourself it isn't fine. I don't want people to hurt you because I just love you too much for that. So the next time someone does shit like this you are gonna stand your ground and so am I. We do not tolerate homophobic people."

"Este?"

"Hm what?"

"I love you too."
