It took a couple of hours for the Nerd Squad to get access to the cameras, as well as for the different squads to get the go-ahead to search their floor. ESU finally got to the scene, and Chu divided his agents throughout the groups.
We were given AR-15 assault rifles, in contrast to our usual police-issued pistols. I, unlike the rest of my squad, was disappointed. "Captain Chu, I see you have a Mossberg 500 in the artillery? I work better with shotguns,"
"It's the assault rifle or your polise-issued pistol, Detective Diaz," He said absentmindedly. He wasn't looking at me, so I was able to give him a dark glare before stomping off. I decided to just use the pistol on my hip.
"Really?" Jackson snorted. "The pistol? What the fuck is that gonna do?"
"Rip a hole through your dick," I snapped, loading the gun.
"Diaz!" Chu yelled over. "You're a go! Get in there, now!"
I took the lead in running towards the back of the building, the bulletproof vest wrapped around my body. We passed some Garcia and Beverly's team, guns pointed towards the door we were going into. I nodded at them and they lowered their weapons slightly. "On three..." I said to my squad. I put up one finger... then two... then three.
Hilbert opened the door quietly and I walked in first, silently climbing up the steps. As quiet as we were, the stairway was very echoey, so every slight noise we made was made louder tenfold. Anna fell in behind me, followed by Warwick, Jackson, and finally Hilbert. Three ESU agents were behind us as well, their faces obscured by helmets.
We climbed up the multiple flights of stairs, passing five doors. The first one was right when we entered and had a big number one on it. The next had a two, the third had a three, and so on. When we got to the door marked 6, I held up my hand and closed it into a fist. Everyone stopped moving. I couldn't help but feel awesome at the moment. Now I know how Terry and Captain Holt feel every day. I gestured for Anna to open the door.
I put up one finger again. Then two, then--
Gunshots and yelling echoed in the stairwell, making us freeze. Anna hadn't opened the door yet. I shook my head and she moved her hand back to her rifle. I looked over the railing, and down the center of the stairs. There was nothing at the bottom, but on one of the lower flights, I saw a hand in a black glove. I pushed past my team, making my way down to the mystery hand. I tapped Warwick as I passed and he fell in behind me. When he got there, we saw two officers laying on the flight of stairs closest to the door to the fourth floor. Warwick checked one of their pulses while I checked the other. NYFD was climbing up. I felt a pulse, but it was weak. I motioned for two of the ESU agents to help out the firefighters. When the firefighters got to us, Warwick was heading back up to our floor and I gestured wildly at the man who was barely alive before following the Lieutenant.
When I got back up there, my legs were burning. There's my leg workout for the WEEK. I nodded to Anna again. I held up one finger... two... three.
She opened the door and Warwick went through first this time, his gun up. I followed him, and behind me came Jackson, Hilbert, Anna, and the last ESU agent. The hotel hallways were long and thin. Warwick went all the way to the end before coming back. Jackson went to the other end, which wasn't as far away, and then came quietly back.
"Warwick?" I asked quietly.
"There are three luxury suites over there, one has a busted lock," He relayed. "Far-left one,"
I nodded. "Shooters could be hiding out in there... Jackson, report,"
"Vending machines are down there, nothing more--"
