Liam's POV
I have been carrying Emily the rest of the journey to Miranda's new place. Ever since we got out far enough ahead, Cyran gave her back to me so he could scout behind us. I won't let anyone touch her other than Angela. I don't want Emily to wake up in anyone else's arms but my own. I wish she would just wake up already. I want to talk to her. Lucas is going out of his mind, he thinks he's lost his mate. He won't be calm until Emily wakes up.
"What if she doesn't want to be our mate anymore? What if she's not a werewolf anymore? We've lost our mate." Lucas wallows.
"Get it together. She will always be our mate." I say. He whimpers to the back of my mind.
"How much further?" Marcus asks.
"Just up over that hill." Miranda says. Finally, I can put Emily down in a bed. My arms have been shaking for the last hour, but I haven't said anything. We walk up the hill and at the bottom I see a small village of people. We walk to the village and the looks on the peoples faces, they all look beaten down and dirty. There are a few houses, but mostly there are just tents. Rose comes running towards us crying and wraps Marcus in a hug. He embraces her. We are all exhausted.
"Follow me." Miranda says. As we walk, people recognize Emily and bow to their knees. They really believe she is going to save them, but how? How does being the Tribrid mean she is going to save everyone? Miranda leads us to one of the few houses.
"This way." She walks into the house and up the stairs. There are only a few doors in this small house and she walks to the one on the right side of the house. She opens the door to a clean bed. I lay Emily down gently. My arms ache but I try not to show it. I don't want to give anyone a reason to make me leave her. I think Miranda notices.
"I will bring you a change of clothes and something to eat." She says before leaving. I sit at the foot of the bed, finally alone, finally done moving. My body is exhausted and my feet are burning. I look down at my hands and they are dirty. A soft knock at the door and it opens. Angela is carrying a plate with a sandwich on it and some water.
"Here, eat." She hands me the plate. I take it from her but look at my hands again.
"There is a bathroom down the hall. I highly doubt the one moment you chose to clean yourself, she'll wake up. And besides, do you want to look like a mole person when she does wake up?" She asks. I really don't want to leave, I want to just stay here forever until she wakes up. But I also want to lay in bed next to her and I can't do that if I'm this dirty.
"If she wakes up."
"I'll pull you out of the shower myself." She says. I hand back the empty plate.
"Here." She hands me some clothes and I go to take a shower. It was a very quick shower, but I definitely feel cleaner. I get changed and head back into Emily's room. Angela is on the bed setting up next to her. She has her eyes closed and is humming something while she holds Emily's hand. I stand there for a moment, I don't want to intrude. I'm not the only one who lost Emily. Angela has lost so much, I almost hadn't realized. She lost her mate, her pack, and her daughter. All of our lives have taken a turn for the worse.
"How is she?" Cyran whispers behind me.
"She's lost a lot, and we haven't had any real time to grieve." I say. Cyran is silent for a moment.
"She'll come back." He says. I know he's trying to comfort me.
"But will she be the same?" I ask. Will she be my mate is what I really wanted to ask, but that would have been selfish.
"She will still be Emily." He says.
"I can hear you, you know." Angela says. She gets up from the bed.
"Glad to see you cleaned up. You don't smell like a swamp anymore. I had another sandwich made for you." She points to a plate with not one but two most sandwiches on it. "Thanks Angela." I say gratefully. She smiles at me.
"No problem dear. I need to get some sleep, and so do you." Angela touches my cheek and smiles before leaving the room with Cyran. I close the door behind them and sit at the edge of the bed. I sit for a moment in silence before getting up and eating the sandwiches. I'm finished before I know it. I turn off the lights and get in the bed beside Emily. At first it's odd sleeping next to someone who's well not technically 'alive', But I just imagined she was in a coma, and that helped make it seem less creepy. My body welcomes the comfort of the bed. My eyes feel heavy almost as soon as my head hits the pillow. I'm out like a light.
The next morning I wake up and my eyes spring open, hopeful to see Emily awake next to me. But she looks the same. I lay beside her. When will she wake up? A knock at the door and Angela walks in with some breakfast.
"Did you get any sleep?" She asks.
"Yes, actually. I guess my body was pretty tired." I say. My arms are still sore from carrying Emily.
"Good. Here, eat some breakfast. You don't mind if I sit in here with you?" She asks.
"Of course not." I say. She sets down the plate and sits next to Emily. She looks down at her unchanged face and touches her cheek. I realize this might be a personal moment she is having. I focus on the food she brought me. Some potatoes, eggs, and sausage. It looks pretty good. I scarf it down pretty quickly.
"Was it that good, or where you just that hungry?" She asks.
"Both." I smile. I look down at Emily.
"I just wish she'd wake up." I say.
"I know. Me too." We watch her for a moment, the room is quiet.
"Well I am going to go speak with Miranda, see what I can do to help. I know you won't leave her side, but these people look like they could use all the help they can get." She says without taking her eyes off Emily. I know she's right, but I just can't leave her side.
"I will do my best." I say. That's all I can think to say. She gets up from the bed and walks over to the door.
"If she wakes."
"You will be the second to know." I tell her. She smiles and leaves the room. I sit with Emily until I hear someone at the door. It's Cyran.
"Hey. How is she?" He asks.
"Still no change." I say.
"Did you need any thing?" He asks.
"For her to wake up." I say. He places a hand on my shoulder.
"Soon." He says before he leaves the room.
Around mid-day I decide to lay down for a bit, my body is still recovering. I lay next to Emily in bed. I'm staring at the ceiling when I hear something. What is that? Is someone walking around? It's so faint. I close my eyes to focus. Like a far away beat. My eyes shoot open.
"Angela, somethings happening." I say in my mind. I sit up and look over at Emily.
"Emily?" I say. Her skin is pale and she isn't moving. I hear running up the stairs.
"What is it?" Angela asks as she reaches the door. I look over at her.
"I hear a heart beat, I think." I say. Angela looks confused. I look back down at Emily and see her eyes flutter open.
"Emily!" I say. She looks the same, a bit paler than before, but exactly the same. I'm so happy she's awake! Emily looks around the room, she seems like she's a little out of it, which is understandable all things considered.
"Emily?" I say her name again, unsure if she heard me the first time. She turns her head and sees me. She looks confused at first almost like she can't recognize me, but then her confusion melts away. She smiles at me. That's when I see her fangs.
