Chapter Four: Sterling's Favor

I spent the next week trying to contact Max. I didn't miss him, I just assumed he might miss his things. Maybe a small part of me hoped he'd miss me. Harper kept telling me not to get my hopes up. Despite everything, she was always there for me. She was always nice that way.

I remembered a time back in grade school. Harper was always great with that small delicate stuff, just like now. She had invited me over to her house for the first time after she had seen the first time I'd done my own make-up.

"You like it don't you?" I remembered crying to her.

"Yes, I love it," she smiled at me. "Would you like to come over today? I want to make it even prettier!"

I wondered for years if she had done that out of pity, but as our relationship has grown, I've come to know that is just the kind of person she is; kind. My mother had saved a photo of what I looked liked that day. I wore sickly bright blue eyeshadow with bright purple lipstick. Mother told me the story so many times by this point that even I have it memorized. She had tried to get me to wipe it off, but I insisted that my craftsmanship not be destroyed.

She had texted me while I was out with Carla on a walk around campus. I was finally beginning to feel like myself. Besides, Carla practically dragged me out of bed for this. After living with her for a few years now, I've finally began to understand her. Why she gets up every day at the same time, or how someone like her found herself working at a library. Both examples are something I've come to know. How a lioness like her climbed out of the dark pit of despair. I felt my phone buzz with another text, presumably from Harper.

"Hold on, I gotta check this." I shielded the screen with my hand, squinting through the sunlight.

Hey, you need to look at this right now! her text read.

I will as soon as I get home. I'm with Carla rn.

We decided to cut our walk short, as Harper kept texting and texting. If this was anyone else, I would have muted my phone. But this was Harper. She doesn't ever do this without reason.

Carla fished the house keys out of her pockets, her cute little keychain clunking against the hardwood door as she pushed it open. I dialed her. It rang briefly before she picked up.

"Hey it's you! Thank God you called back," is how she answered.

"Erm yeah. What's going on?"

"So I went over to Max's dorm to drop off those things for you, but I couldn't get in."

"What!" I yelled into the microphone.

"Police were blocking it off. They turned me away."

"Come over later and tell me all about it okay? I've got some homework to catch up on from last week. "

"Yeah sounds good."

Lying didn't feel right, but I didn't want to tangle her up in the mess I'm in. That guy, the crow, it all seemed so strange. What did Sterling mean by "you'll know when to use it" anyways? Was I supposed to use it last night? That couldn't be right. Despite his odd mannerisms last night, I didn't feel like I was in danger. He said it himself. If he wanted to do more, he would have.

I decided to go back to the coffee shop to see if I could find Tuxedo Mask, Sterling, or even that stranger. Someone had to have answers. I arrived to a pavement full of soot and ash. To my surprise, that place did burn literally down to the ground.

I asked a few people about it, I was met with a look of confusion every time. They wore hazy looks in their eyes as the confidently informed me there was no coffee shop. There had never been a shop here. Those kinds of responses cut my search very, very short.

There was a nice, paved sidewalk that looped around the park. It must have been strategically placed so that walkers can easily circle the lake. White, wooden benches were placed on the side, facing the lake for those who preferred to sit and watch.

I plopped down, fumbling my phone in my hands. The bright text bubble popped up.

Hey, the text read. My lip trembled. It was from Max.

WTF Where have you been??, I texted back in a mix of angry and desperation.  As I waited anxiously for him to respond, I learned that this text became a text that he would not respond to. I tried a few more texts, most of them full of buzz words to get him to respond. First I tried to lure him back to his phone by asking if he wants his things. No answer. So I tried something a little more sympathetic. Asking him about the police tape, I sent another message. Maybe that's why he never showed up. But just as I thought, he didn't reply.

Teardrops fell down onto the screen. The phone worked to track the drops as if they were my fingers pressing down on the keyboard. It glitched out, closing the messenger and selecting another notification that popped up. I sighed, turned off the screen and put it into my pocket. Work started soon anyways.

My shift was quiet and uneventful. My boss was there training a new employee. The sun set and it was time to leave. The wind blew from the window, beckoning me into the night. I embraced its call and headed outside to walk home.

The sky was beautiful. The moon, hiding behind a small cloud, looked like a living painting of light blues and greens. I counted the endless amount of stars in the sky, smiling at the comfort they gave me. The emptiness I had been feeling within me melted away for a brief moment.

There was a scream. My heart began to race. I felt my fingers tremble. Now what? What was I supposed to do? I heard her scream again. This time there was more force, more frantic. I willed my legs toward the direction of it. There I found her. A small young woman pinned up against a lightpost by a crypid horror. Its limbs stretched beyond any normal bipedal creature, both human or animal. One of its hands rested on the ground despite the fact that it was standing tall, it had to be at least seven feet tall. The other hand restrained the girl to the post that was supposed to be a beacon of light and safety.

I threw the feather from Sterling up into the air. "Sterling grant me your favor!" I screamed. Then, what happened next was out of a superhero comic. The feather began to glow in a bright light, enveloping me within. Then I emerged, dressed in a golden chestplate with matching pauldrons and gauntlets. My legs hidden by a long white skirt that seemed to forever drift in a wind, despite the air growing stale and stagnate.

"Monster!" I hissed. "I cannot allow your transgressions upon this innocent girl to continue any longer. It is time that you perish."

The creature roared at me in response, not taking more than a second to drop the girl and charge at me. I braced myself to withstand the attack, but it was much stronger than I anticipated and I was knocked down. It loomed over me with its lifeless eyes. Its mouth crammed with unsymmetrical teeth. My skin shivered when the creature's drool fell down onto it. It leaned down close, no more than six inches from my face and began to roar once more. As it did, it went limp falling down. As soon as I pushed it off of me, it fell to ash.

"Are you alright?" a deep voice asked me. A voice that set my heart swooning.

"Yes, I'm fine Tuxedo Mask," I answered.
