I put my key into the door, hearing the lock click and give way. Carla and Harper were inside, dancing. Harper cracked a smile as they tried to spin. Despite her enjoyment, Carla was seen clenching her jaw, struggling to follow. Her feet fumbled over one another, her knees almost buckling. It was bizarre to see her this way; not at her best, struggling. I shut the door and sat from the kitchen, watching silently. The soft melody from the tv looped again and again.
Harper kept at it, lifting Carla off the floor and lifting her spirits. And eventually, I saw the improvement. She began to anticipate Harper's movement and in turn reacted accordingly. Her hair swayed behind her, shining in the light. Then the music skipped to a tango-like song. Carla's eyes lit up as she began to excel, swinging and twirling around with confidence. A smile crept onto her face as she dipped Harper down into a low embrace.
"I thought you said you couldn't dance," Harper beamed as she stoop back up.
"I didn't either. I just felt something swell up inside me."
"What was it?"
"Anger," she sighed. "I'm not good at that fancy flowy stuff. I'm not good at that." She broke away, rubbing her temple. "I'm just not good."
"Stop it. That's enough," I eventually chimed in after a depressing silence. She turned to me, her eyes widening. "You don't do those things anymore. You're better than that, you know it." It felt harsh coming out of my mouth "Sorry, I didn't mean it like that."
"No, you're right," she sighed, slapping her thighs and standing up. "I want to dance on the cruise. I want to dance gracefully. I want to be good at this. Again," she requested, lifting a hand to Harper. I turned the music back to the soft melody, and they went.
At some point, they broke for lunch. Harper was dabbing her forehead to rid of the beads of sweat that had formed throughout their practice. We filled our time while we waited for the pizza to cook with small talk. Happy small talk.
"So I swung by the guy's dorm again," Harper eventually said. "There was still police tape everywhere."
"That's bizarre," Carla replied half-heartily while looking down at her phone."I know right? I want to go back at night to investigate." Carla looked up from her phone.
"How about tonight?"
"Tonight?" I questioned. "Like in four hours?"
"Yeah. I've already prepared."
"How?" Carla asked.
"Oh, you know," she trailed off with a grin.
"Never mind, I don't think I want to know." Then the oven timer began to beep, so we ate.
The three of us had officially hatched a plan to meet the at the library around 10pm. The entire time Harper warned us not to text about it or tell anyone else. We split up to gather any supplies we might need: rope, flashlights, backpacks, even a disposable camera. Anything that might be important, we put on a list and gathered.
I made it back home first and took the time to have a moment to myself. I took a drink from the fridge to calm my nerves and sat on the porch. The air smelled stale, and the trees looked sad. I whipped out my phone, without thinking, and texted Max. He left me on read. "What am I thinking?" I sighed to myself. And of course, someone had to answer.
"What are you thinking?" Sterling asked, picking at his feathers. I rolled my eyes and sat up to go back inside.
"I can't do this right now." The crow hopped along by my feet.
"Why not?" Something's picking at your mind."
"I am sworn to secrecy."
"And I'm a talking crow." I grumbled and shut the door before he could sneak in.Eventually, it was time. Carla and I walked to the library with our items and to our surprise, someone was waiting with Harper. We studied the mystery person's silhouette, her straightened hair and slender figure gave her away. It was Caroline.
Caroline was Harper's roommate. As far as I was aware, they weren't close but not at war with each other either. So it was fair for both of us to be shocked when we learned she would be joining us in our adventure. But then she began to speak, and we felt silly for doubting her motives at all.
"This could be the perfect scoop for the paper," she defended herself. "We've all seen it, we've all heard about it. So why does no one know what's going on?"
"Good question, I like it," Carla grinned. "Here, these are for all of you." She handed everyone masks to conceal our faces from the nose down. It wasn't super practical, but it wasn't suspicious in the slightest.
"Let's get going!" Harper lightly sang.
Every step we took towards the dorm, the deeper my heart sank. I couldn't help but feel like I was about to see something I never was meant to see. On the way, Harper and Caroline explained the plan. It seemed simple, but teaching Carla to dance seemed simple in Harper's mind. We needed to get into the building from a window, hopefully one was left unlocked in the living room area. From there, we needed to get down the hall and investigate the communal places of the dorm as well as any places that seem to be of interest to the police. Most importantly, to get out unseen.
