I had the small animal in my grasp; its rapid heartbeat could be felt beneath its soft pelt of fur; its eyes frantically darting between my face and the rock I held in my hand."KILL IT! KILL IT!" my father's voice echoed in my head.
I raised the rock as I went for the kill, except I halted when instead of the fragile animal in front of me, I was staring into the eyes of a girl not that much younger than me.
"KILL IT! KILL IT!" this time it was Cato who roared into my ear.
A sick smile spread on his face as he gawked at the girl squirming to get out of my tight clutch.
"Aww look, little Clove is hesitating!" Glimmer taunted, appearing from behind.
"I don't hesitate," I growled in response.
I brought the rock down onto her skull. Trying not to look at the dark red liquid that seeped into her hair and stained my hands. I kept pounding the rock into her head till her body lay limp in my arms. I shoved her off me as I stood up. The deep rumble of the cannon sent a tremor through the ground.
"Come on, I think I saw the Marvel near the river, following the boy from district 12," I mumble, moving on.
The leaves crunched under my feet as I stalked off to look for my next kill. I could sense Glimmer and Cato trailing behind me.
"Don't be such a baby Clove, it was just a joke!" Cato called out, I could hear the smirk on his face.
I kept my gaze forward, ignoring their presence. I stopped dead in my tracks when I felt someone's arm twisted around my
waist and the ragged metal edge of a blade pressed against my throat. A harsh blow to my head dragged my mind into the darkness, leaving me with nothing but the sound of muted screams and the call of name, only they sounded as if they were miles away. Soon even the noises faded away into nothing. The damp, dense smell of rotting wood surrounded me as I gradually regained consciousness. The soil beneath my body clung to my clothes. A shrill scream came out of my mouth when I was wrenched upward by a strong hand. My eyes jerked open, scanning the scenery around me. I was silent within an instant when I was met with the terrifying gaze of my father. His hand struck me across my face, leaving my cheek burning as blood rushed to the surface of my skin.
"You will get up, you will do it again and I will NOT have to listen to your whiny, annoying voice again! Do you hear me you little brat?" I winced and cowered as his boisterous voice shook me to my core.
My body trembled as I sauntered over to the pine tree that loomed above me. I heaved myself up, digging my dagger deep into the heart of the tree. I had my sight on the arrow that was now not far out of my reach. Splinters pierced my skin as gripped the branches. I managed to wrap my hand around the arrow as I tried to yank it out of the tree. I could feel my father's intense stare boring a hole through the back of my head.
One moment of losing focus and it was all gone. The tree fell away, or more like I fell from the tree. I didn't feel the crack as my spine fractured. All I could feel was reality slowly slipping away. The world swayed around me. Cato looked down at my motionless corpse. A tear trickled from his eye as he tried to shake me awake. But you can't shake awake the dead.
