A Wander on the Beach

Chapter 12

(Gilbert Russell)

-Hecate

"Russell! Get your head out of the gutter!" Arrows flew, piercing the tree behind me. Blood trickled down my cheeks. I wiped it with the back of my hand and stared at the blood.

"Gods Russell, why are you in such a daze today." Lucianne Thropp snapped, glaring daggers at me. She patted the kid who shot the arrow and led him away, still scowling at me from afar. I didn't know why I felt so weird today. It's a normal day, at the very least. No monster attacks, no Gods striking down on people, no nothing. A calm day, well, by Camp Half Blood standards. I ignored Lucianne and ditched my bow and arrow, returning it to the rack. I exhaled and moved forward towards...somewhere I guess. I kept wandering on and on until I finally stopped by the beach.

The sun was bright, the skies were clear, no clouds in sight. The sea breeze gently tousled my hair, putting it in disarray. I breathed the salty air and took it all in. I don't normally get to go to the beach since my mom preferred the mountains. The lush forests and wildlife did thrill me but not as much as the beaches. Tide pools with crabs scurrying by, the white sandy shores littered with miscellaneous shells and rocks. Best of it yet, I enjoy finding pieces of washed up glass. The ocean had eroded until it was smooth and the translucent sheen of it enthralled me.

I took off my sneakers and socks then set it down on the sand, away from the crashing waves so it wouldn't get wet. The sand was dry but the closer I walked towards the sea, the sand beneath my feet got colder. I stepped into the water, where it barely reached my ankle. It was cold, contrary to how bright the sun is shining today. My dad is bright as usual, I thought.

Maybe all I needed was the beach afterall. I strolled along the shore as waves rushed up and down my feet. I was looking for more sea glass to add to my collection but I hadn't found any yet. I trekked along, spacing out as life passes by me. I was fine with it. It was really calming to walk and take in the view. The Long Island beaches aren't particularly known for their clear waters or perfect weather but I love it either way. It has its own charms that's just so unique from another. Who knows if it's because Poseidon is watching over this beach.

As soon as he stopped walking, he saw it. A shining piece of sea glass radiating off the light of the sun. He stooped down to pick it up, cradling it in his palm. It was beautiful. Translucent and bright red, a rarity. Quickly dusting off the sand, I slipped it in my pocket and walked back towards the camp. Luckily, I didn't get pinched by crabs or met any unwanted creatures before I could get to my shoes. With shoes in hand, I walked back barefoot. Even though the ground was hot, I didn't mind it. I walked back to my cabin leisurely, greeting folks along the way.

By the time I reached my cabin, I was sure I had greeted at least 10 people. I pushed the door open and slipped in. The cabin was lively as usual, music always blaring out and people conversed about life. I walked to my own little corner, there stood my bed. Above it was a little shelf, courtesy to the Hephaestus campers. On it was my collection of sea glass. I took the newest member and settled it with its other brethren. I grinned and slumped onto my bed, sweaty but satisfied with today's escapade.

A/N

I am on a roll! I wrote this chapter on the same day as chapter 11 so I am quite proud of myself! Yet again, this chapter is a solo chapter written only by yours truly. The others are having quite a busy time with school work but fret not, they still are part of the crew. Mostly supporting on the sidelines rn since I'm the only one without anything to do. Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy this chapter, give us a vote, and send in a comment. Have a great summer solstice and love all of you supporters!
