Okay, there are three types of people - 1. The ones who love children. 2. Who try to love children because they do deeply love them but just don't know how to show them. 3. People who fucking hate children and yet have one and have to endure the horse shit the kid throws around.
Or well....in some cases the 'horse shit' is actually the kid themselves.
It's been two days since Aurora is awake and frankly she's causing a disaster around the ship.
The Corporalki have memorized her breathing pattern and heartbeat to already be prepared for her in advance if she is to come to the infirmary. The girl is a walking hurricane.
The only two times she managed to get to the infirmary undetected, she had downed three medicinal substances, scattered away a bottle of Jurda, and screamed bloody murder at midnight because there was a spider.
The General was not pleased. He had barked orders to grisha to make sure all harmful objects were out if reach for the young girl. The disasters were less but Aurora had somehow managed to topple together loads of materials and climb over them to reach the bottles of Jurda."Do you really enjoy getting your hands spoiled by the jurda leaves?"
"Ya ya ya ya!"
"You need to learn what respect is."
"Krispet?"
"What?"
"Pet pet!"
"That's....not what I mean."
"Gimmi gimmi!"
"You're not...I'm not giving you any pets.
Please stop crying.
Do you always cry this much?
Alina stop laughing!"Aurora had also grown a petty attachment to grisha powers. She expected all etherealki to greet her with a gust of wind or a puff of fire. Hell, she even started to memorize who has which power.
And, frankly she bloody hated Ivan for some reason or another. Alina said she took after her mother, Aleksander said Ivan just makes sure that 'interesting' ideas are out of her reach. Aurora never really gives up any reason. And all of that brings us to this moment right now, where father and daughter, who pretty much have the same damn ego, are having an argument.
"You can't keep up like this!" The Darkling roared and spread his hands to emphasize his point of 'Do not step in the infirmary'.
"Yu cam to di ifrimiry," Aurora babbled and mirrored The Darkling's posture, earning many snickers from grisha and Otkazat'sya alike.
"Because I don't go looking for trouble." The Darkling grinded his teeth. Damn children and their ability to not understand.
"I don go wooking fa trable," Aurora argued, a furrow to her brows.
"That's all you ever do!" The Darkling growled.
"You wying," Aurora concluded with a self satisfactory grin. Alina actually snorted from across the room at this.
"I'm....are you listening to yourself, kid?"
"Arw yu listenin to me, man."
This time, Alina's chuckled were accompanied by Ivan's snort who almost immediately was ready to stop his own heart at the 'look' The Darkling gave him. "Oh, okay," He huffed, "I'll be locking you in your room as punishment for a whole day."At this, Aurora's bottom lip wobbled like it always does moments before disaster. She widened her eyes to the size of emeralds and gave a wiggly pout - clearly trying to look as pathetic as possible.
To Aleksander's horror, he felt it working.
"Please don't cry," He muttered (no, he wasn't pleading) because saints help them if she did. Aurora, damn that girl, gave a sniff and gave a very theatrical pout - clearly about to combust with tears.
The darkling looked incredibly uncomfortable standing in front of his own daughter (wow, his daughter, when did that happen?) who was about to cry. "I..." he took a step forward, he might not know much about children but affection helped.
Panic gripped him as Aurora practically fell over him, tears flowing down faster than he could think.Moments later, the floor was dusted with jurda leaves and Aurora was beaming at the Darkling who was glaring right at his crew as if challenging anyone to laugh - well, anyone except Alina since the girl clearly had no self preservation instincts.
Another thing Aurora had gotten used to was eating from everyone's plates. It really didn't matter who gave her the bit of bread, she took it gladly. During meals, she would run around the whole ship, falling many times due to the rocking, and practically scream at people to give her a share.
Alina, instead of outright giving her something, fed her - and to everyone's surprise, Aurora sat very peacefully whenever Alina gave her a look. Also, Aurora never came to ask the Darkling for food, no one knew why she did it. Aleksander suspected that Alina had made it quite clear to her not to, or maybe the girl had some sense as to not aggravate him. However, he really hadn't anticipated this whole thing getting on his nerves.
He was her father for saint's sake. It's not like he would refuse to give her a share of his food.
He just hoped Aurora knew that. And she did. Aurora only did that because she somehow understood that this was getting on Aeksander's nerves.
There wasn't another display of her power. The crew mostly stayed away from Alina.
The Darkling did try to speak to Alina, to ask her how she did whatever she had done. The sun summoner had clearly overpowered him and he was as curious as a anyone can be.
But the thing is, the ship was large, large enough that when someone tried to ignore someone, they had plenty of space to do so.
He soon gave up because what else could he have done.
He cursed Alina to heaven and cursed himself to hell. But Aleksander did find himself every night outside Alina's room, quitely listening to Alina whispering soothing words to Aurora.
