For a long time, I heard nothing but silence.
Maybe they wouldn't come.
Maybe they thought it was some kind of prank, and they ignored it.
Maybe they wouldn't even try.
'Give them some time,' I thought to myself, trying to keep my hopes up.
'This place is a long way to drive, and they need time to get here.'
My eyes were droopy and I yawned, leaning back on the bed beside Kai. I couldn't go to sleep—I wouldn't allow myself to.
What if they came?
We had to be prepared to leave.
Besides, I knew supper would be in a bit, by the fact that I could see nothing in the darkness outside of the window, showing the time of night. I have began to use the light in the sky shiny through the window to show the time of day, and I often spent hours watching the sun slowly rise or set.
I shivered at the thought.
I desperately didn't want to see Mommy again, and I knew that I would have to at supper. I was ashamed, but disgustingly, Mommy felt no guilt for what she did.
She felt no remorse, and she had no thought or knowledge as to what she did was wrong.
When she is caught, if they catch her, I would tell them all about this. I would tell them about what she did to Carson, what she did to me, what she did to all of children—every last detail.
Mommy couldn't get out of jail after what she did—and hopefully, they kill her before she even gets there.
But something also dawned on me, and I didn't feel so well. I didn't want to face her, also knowing that I just made a call that could aid our escape.
Mommy might know.
Mommy might have already figured out.
Quick footsteps suddenly echoed from down the stairs, heading up—and I looked at Anna, seeing she held the same confused expression as me. Her eyes widened.
That was Mommy.
But it was strange, because usually—Mommy doesn't make noises when she walks around. Mommy usually doesn't make noises when she heads up the stairs.
Unless she's giving us a head start.
Anna stood up, waking up Alex who was dozing off next to her. Carson jumped up as well, looking at me and pointing to under the bed. I gasped.
Would this be another game?
Was Mommy looking for someone to take for supper?
I woke up Kai from next to me, him sitting up in shock. He looked around, his breath ragged.
"What?-" I took him by his arm and pulled him off the bed, crawling under the bed and motioning him under as well. He quickly did as he was told, grunting in pain when his elbows scraped against the hard floor.
He looked around in shock, unaware of what was happening. Anna and the others were about to open the door and leave to find a better hiding place, before the quick footsteps already made their way into the hallway.
They didn't have a chance to hide.
Mommy was moving fast.
The children quickly hid behind the door, sucking in their guts and holding their breath. Anna gripped onto Alex for dear life.
Their faces were pale, and it looked like they hadn't experienced something or heard something like this. It was like they were shocked by how panicked and fast the footsteps were.
