"Laney, would you believe me if I told you I was Corey?"

"No, I wouldn't," I reply. "But I wish you were," I whisper, making sure he doesn't hear the last part. "Why do you ask?"

"Because I am," he mumbles.

"That's impossible!" I exclaim.

"I'm serious, Lanes." He shows me an orange beanie. The very beanie Corey Riffin wore. My eyes widen.

It can't be. Why did he pretend?

"Do you know how bad I felt!? Thinking that I've fallen in love with someone while not being over another when they were the same person? I felt terrible! And now you're telling me you were the same person the whole time? I always thought Corey Riffin resented me for never visiting him when he came home from boarding school! And that he would never talk to me again!"

Tears start to flow down my face and I run away. I don't care if I end up home or not. I'd rather be anywhere but here.
