"Natalie, how is the baby?" Evan asked walking into the room.
Not a day went by that I regretted that he ever found out that I was pregnant with his child.
The red lights had come on, but I hadn't even bothered to react. My arms had been tied to the headboard of the bed, and the leather cuffs kept my ankles chained to the foot of it.
"This marks day forty two that I haven't heard your beautiful voice..." He sat down on the bed next to me.
I had barely heard what he had said as his words no longer registered inside of my brain.
"My little bird."
I motionlessly stared in front of me – it had been easy to disassociate.
It was my favorite thing to do, now.
Nothing could hurt me there.
His fingers trailed across my forearms where his name had been inked heavily into my skin. His name was in large, bold, cursive letters that took up my entire inner forearm. That had been the last day that I had spoken to him.
Since I was pregnant, it was the only punishment that he deemed fit for betraying him.
I...suppose seeing my mother's and Vincent's deaths wasn't enough to satiate the sadist inside of him. I had pleaded on my knees for him to spare the two but --
Mercy wasn't in Evan's vocabulary.
"I love my name etched on your skin..." Evan remarked. "Leaving my mark on you permanently."
I blinked ahead, still not willing to say anything to him. There was nothing to say to the man that controlled everything that I did – every action that I took. There was no free will in this life when he was next to me. The only thing he had no say in was when I took a breath, though, I was sure if he could be in control of that...then he would.
"It's time for your daily IV, Nat," he snapped his fingers to the door.
Algernon came in with a black bag, which was new for him to do. He was meant to be trained in torture, not anywhere in the area of medical procedures. I raised my eyes to meet with his, and Evan took immediate notice, seeing that I had regained consciousness in front of him.
"That's right, little bird," he pressed. "I thought I'd be nice and let you speak with your friend today."
Evan stood up from the bed, but I didn't follow him with my eyes.
No, they were locked onto Algernon. I opened my mouth to say something...my throat was incredibly dry. I didn't remember how long it had been since I had last said anything. I hadn't even spoken to myself when I had been isolated...I did my best to swallow some spit, which only prompted in myself coughing miserably.
"Water, lab rat."
"Yes, Master Hale," Algernon snapped back, digging into the black bag to reveal a bottled water. My eyes glanced to the liquid – it had been a while since I had anything orally. Most of the time, Evan kept me hydrated through the use of IV's.
Algernon opened it up, removing the seal as Evan continued to watch, making sure that nothing suspicious was happening between the two of us no doubt. Algernon pointed the tip of it towards my mouth and pushed the sides of the bottle gently, releasing the water without using any effort.
I didn't remember the last time I actually drank water --
After I swallowed a few times, properly lubricating my throat, I stared into Algernon's eyes.
