my heart rose quickly to my throat.

i'll be honest, I wasn't sure you'd respond. how are you? the words flowed slowly through my fingertips to the screen. moments later, three dots popped up.

i meant what i said on the show, carson. lol

a warm buzz sent throughout my body. he continued.

i'm doing pretty well, actually. yourself?

I stared at my screen, thumbs static. nearly paralyzed, I left the messages and went to his profile. I accepted his follow request and scrolled through his pictures. a smirk smeared across my face as I swiped through his self-recorded singing and guitar videos. there was just something about musicians that did it for me. it's why I even considered marcus in the first place.

I jumped back to the message screen.

i'm great, honestly :) I couldn't help but type out the smile that was on my face. just been scrolling through your instagram. you're so talented

Z: thank you, that means more than you know! been scrolling through yours as well. marcus didn't know what he was missing. you live in missouri?

C: I do unfortunately haha. in the st. louis area

Z: hey now, plenty of amazing music came out of there. no need to shit on it

we continued playful small talk throughout the evening, but it escalated slowly.

Z: you know I was really taken aback that you messaged me. the guys told me immediately after the show I shouldn't have said that lol

C: to be honest you probably shouldn't have lol. lucky for you, i'm just desperate enough to DM you anyway

Z: and lucky for me, marcus doesn't have very good taste in women. you are far too stunning for him. I hope you didn't take anything he said too seriously

C: you're too sweet. It did kind of suck, but I wasn't that interested, to be honest. he's cool, but I never really had my heart set on anything coming from it. I just love the show and have been single forever

Z: well maybe the end of forever is coming sooner than you thought

up until this point his flattery had been mostly physical, but this was the first time he alluded to something more. something I was quickly coming to like about zach was his honesty. he never beat around the bush longer than he needed to.
