Her eyes open
To a new, brilliant day.
She sees
Two of her friends
On the tree nearby
Beckoning, calling
For a day out.
Ah, if only!
But there's
Someone else too
Who's pointing at her.
A little boy
Laughing innocently
And watching her
Try to flutter.
And the cage door.
It's unlocked!
This gives her
A new, fresh
Wave
Of energy
Of hope
Of enthusiasm.
She heaves
At the door
The huge, heavy door
Unyielding,
Though it is.
But the day
Is meant to be
A miracle
For her.
The boy's hand
Reaches out
As she shirks away
But it's directed
Somewhere else.
The boy
Opens the door!
Unbelieving, but
Not wasting a second,
The little bird
Takes the plunge
Jumps off
And starts
To fall down.
Had she,
After all the struggle,
Forgotten
How to fly?
Being restricted
For so long,
Had a bird
Forgotten
How to soar?
But then
she feels
Her wings open
Her body rise
Her feathers
Cut through the air
Her chest
Rush through the clouds
And she's free!
She's free
Unbound
Unopposed
At long last.
It's a wonder
She's not dying
Of joy.
