Clothes were changed and goodnights exchanged as Y/n stood in the midst of it all, finishing up her night routine. She yawned as she brushed through her hair, feeling a fellow newsie tap her arm to wish her sweet dreams.
"Sweet dreams to you too, Tumbler," she smiled sweetly at the youngest boy. Tumbler then began proudly telling her about how many papes he sold that day. However, he got tired a few minutes later and left for bed.
Y/n set the brush down and turned to her bunk, where a certain curly haired brunette was waiting for her. Mush Meyers, her bunkmate, best friend and newly found crush all in one. He had watched the interaction, admiring everything about her. Mush's eyes lightened up as she walked over.
"Took ya long enough to get here," the boy said with feigned annoyance and an exaggerated eye roll. Y/n chuckled and he couldn't help but let his mouth curve upwards. Little did Y/n know, she was his new found crush as well.
Something was going to change.
"I'm sorry Mush, but Tumbler was so excited about today, he couldn't stop talking. Also, you don't get to blame me. You didn't have to wait."
"Yeah. But y'know I can't fall asleep without saying goodnight to my favourite goil!"
Y/n brought Mush into a hug, resting her head in the crook of his neck. Partly for comfort and partly to hide her profuse blush. Mush let his hands wrap around her waist. He pressed a soft kiss to her cheek and pulled her nearer to his body.
The moment seemed to last forever. Well, if forever was until the candles started to be blown out and the snores of teenage boys started to echo. They pulled apart and realised they had never been that close before. A moment of silence passed.
"Night Mush," Y/n whispered. She turned on her heel before feeling a slight tug on her hand.
"Wait y/n/n.." Mush paused, seemingly uncertain of himself before blurting out,
"Can I kiss you? Like, properly?"
Y/n nodded with a smile as Mush brought her into a soft embrace, gently pressing his lips to hers.
