    SUMMER WAS ALWAYS THE best season. Carter Aurielle refused to wear big sweatpants when her mother would tell her it was below twenty degrees (even though she always ended up having to so she wouldn't die)━━and let's just say, Carter did not want to die.

     At least not before the summer.

    Carter had been best friends with Belly Conklin for years. Her name was actually Isabel, but the name just sort of stuck! It seemed to make no difference to her, and Carter found herself looking at her expression every time the silly nickname was used━━only to see her smile or laugh.

    Sure, maybe Carter could have found herself swooning over her bestest friend, which she didn't think was odd until━━well, right now.

    She's thinking long and hard about it━━the same as she does at night. Because she could have a small crush on her best fucking friend.

     Fuck her life.

    Whatever! That wasn't relevant at that moment. The only thing that mattered was she was driving to cousins. The place she grew up in until her dad found a better job back in the city━━where Belly and her family, Laurel and Steven, lived. Until they moved back home every summer, her perfect house with the white walls was just a memory.

    With Laurel and Carter's mom, Maura, being so close━━she caught onto the bright idea that visiting the childhood house wasn't such a terrible idea! And if Belly was going to be there, so was she.

     She did feel guilty about leaving Taylor behind. She means, she always came once and a while and stayed with Belly━━or with her if she and Bells snuck out of her house to climb through the window at night.

Sleepovers with the three of them were always the best.

Yes! Carter was neighbours with her best friend, at a summer house in Cousins.

    What more could she ask for?

     A Lot actually. And that could start with her telling Jeremiah Fisher to fuck off.

     The catch with being neighbours with your best friend and two amazing mothers who treat you like a princess━━is the not-so-charming princes that come along with it. Of course, she would never say that to Belly's face because charming was Conrad Fisher's middle name.

     Apparently.

    The girl had been dreaming about him since she was ten. Carter knows because she's heard her have a full conversation with someone named "radish" while she was asleep at one of their sleepovers. She never lived it down, even now! She and Taylor were laughing their asses off after Taylor recorded it and Belly chased her down the street with their pyjamas on to delete the audio off voice memos.

     Carter sat alone in her room and listened to music while all that was going on.

     Eventually, both the girls came back hot and sweaty━━having to take a shower while Carter sat there snickering.
