LAUREL HAD ALREADY DROPPED Carter and Isabel off at the country club for the debutante tea. Even though Carter loved to shop and dress up, she couldn't ignore the anxiousness that was bubbling up in her stomach. She knew she wasn't competing against anyone, but Carter tended to compare herself to others a lot. Especially girls.

Isabel's anxiousness wasn't helping her own either. She punched her in the car as a way of 'helping', but Isabel just playfully punched her back.

As they walk closer to the building, Carter spots Jeremiah carrying a handful of towels, still wearing his lifeguard uniform.

Well━━not so much of an outfit. Let her just say, the lifeguard outfit was just swimming shorts and a whistle. Of course, Jeremiah wouldn't pass a job to have his shirt off all day and be surrounded by pretty girls at the pool!

"Hey!" Isabel called to him. He didn't seem to hear as he continued walking with the towels.

"Hey, asshole!" Carter called, making his head snap to hers before he completely stopped walking. "Oh look, now the cat's got his tongue."

Scoffing playfully, he tilted his head to the side with a smirk. "Shut up."

As his mouth remained open, his eyes darted before laughing. "I didn't even recognize you guys!"

Carter scoffed. "Can tell."

Isabel looked down. "Tell me the truth. Um━━do we look like fools?"

"━━Bells! I already said we look hot as fuck, so we're about to go in there and kill it, right Jere?"

Jeremiah's eyebrows rose as he nodded along with her. "Uh━━yeah, yeah. You guys look great, I'll walk you over."

Smiling, the two girls took his arms, linking them around their own as they skipped to the building.

"Did you seriously drag your mothers shopping with you?" Jeremiah laughed before Carter rolled her eyes.

"Laurel is the one who hates shopping. My mom would die to shop any day I mean if she wasn't so busy worrying about money and me instead of herself. So she didn't go with us."

He sighed. "Really? I love Maura, it sucks she'd pass such a chance."

Carter repeated his sigh. "Yeah, I know. She's just been acting so different lately. It's honestly setting me off."

"I'm sure she's fine. This used to be your old house. He's probably getting used to it like every summer. Returning to a place with lots of memories can━━y'know, be a lot, I guess?" Isabel voiced, sympathy etched in her tone. Carter guessed she was right. She did find parts of her felt missing every time she came back. But that missing piece was mended by the Fishers, just like it always was. And she was endlessly grateful for them.

"Oh my god. At the pool, Steven gives me free cookies at the stand. They have strawberry, raspberry-type cookies━━oh! They're to die for." Jeremiah said, attempting to have a lighter conversation. He always knew when Carter started to feel uncomfortable most times.
