His P.O.V

My mother words hit me like a tank and did I feel like a dick.

I had done nothing but give her shit from the minute we began talking. Accusing her of being fake.

Only to find out she had left Steven, which I was seemingly happy about.

The hurt in her eyes hit me deep, as she looked like she wanted to cry. Just as I was about to apologize a voice turned my attention.

There stood Kennedy smiling and happy as if nothing was going on. Then again as had no idea what my mother and I's conversation had included.

"Dinner sounds lovely" My mother gave a small smile and stood up from the sofa.

Walking past me as if I wasn't standing right there. Which honestly hurt a bit but it wasn't anything I wasn't used to.

Glancing back at me before following Kennedy.

The hurt in her face was a look I recognized all too well. A look I had received every day for the past for years, except this time it lacked the disappointment. It was just hurt, a deep pain that lingered behind her fake smile.

My mother tapped Kennedy on the shoulder as she grabbed things from the refrigerator.

"Excuse me hun where is your restroom?" She spoke softly avoiding eye contact.

"Down the hallway and it's the second door on your left" Kennedy smiled before turning back to her work.

I walked up and leaned against the freezer the cool metal calming me.

"What's wrong" Kennedy asked closing the fridge and setting the items on the counter.

She came up and wrapped her arms around my torso causing me to stand straight. My arms wrapping around her back and pulling her close.

"I fucked up Ken, real bad this time" I sighed feeling her give me a squeeze.

Her head rested right against the side of my chest my heart hid behind. My chin rested on the top of her hair.

"Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to interrupt" My mothers voice gave somewhat of a shriek.

"It's okay mom, can we step outside for a moment" I asked softly.

"One minute, now move" She replied her glare cold.

What had happened in the span of five seconds to turn her from upset to the point of crying to snippy and harsh.

Not worrying about her mood I walked to the door opening it for her. Then followed behind and shut the door quietly behind.

"Momma I'm sorry" I began before being greeted with her hand facing me, a signal for me to stop.

"Enough Michole, enough of your accusations, enough of your outbursts, enough of your manipulation, enough of your anger. It is enough, now you have made some changes but you fix what I just told you or you are not coming home come September 3rd. Are we clear?" She spoke to me.

"Mom you know I didn't mean it! You just showed up! No warning! No call! No notice! You show up! And changed! In normal old clothes! Having left that prick of a husband! And you yell at me for my reaction" I damn near shouted at her.

"Michole Elijah! I said enough" She shouted sternly. Her jaw clenching her eyes shooting daggers at me.

"I will stop when you explain what the fuck happened!" I growled at her my fists clenching and unclenching at my sides.

"I found out! I found out that he purposefully withheld information at your fathers trial so that the hospital would win." She shouted at me before burying into tears.

"Mom" I almost whispered out to her shocked.

"Not to mention he has been sleeping with Lydia Cross for damn near two years. I told Benjamin he couldn't turn a whore into a housewife" She cried but laughed at the very end.

"The worst part is, he did it all on purpose. Not only to make more money for himself but because he wanted me. You know I used to go to school with him, and boy did he like me. However your father always held my heart in the back pocket of those jeans. So he figured if he practically bankrupt us then swept in to save the day I would forever be greatful" She scuffed wiping her eyes.

"That bastard I'll kill him!" I growled "How dare he do that!" I fumed my fist clenching.

"No need for that baby" She laughed reaching over and grabbing my wrist with her hand.

"Why is that" I asked as she forcefully unclenched my hand.

"For one his clothing is ashes in the front yard, and second of all he is possibly going to jail for withholding not information" She answered letting go of my wrist.

"Momma I'm so sorry" I chuckled at just how crazy my mother was. Having burned that mans clothes in the yard.

"It's okay baby, what did I tell you after your daddy died" She asked me looking up with a smile.

"Not to talk to strangers" I joked receiving a playful slap on the arm.

"Okay okay! That it's you and me against the world" I smiled down at her.

"Damn right it is, and I'm sorry or ever forgetting that myself" She gave a sad smile.

"I'm sorry for being such a shit son for four years" I apologized in return to her.

"Well now the past isn't a worry the future is just a mystery" She smiled reaching over and hugging me.

"Do you guys want swee-" Kennedy stopped mid sentence at the doorway.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to interrupt I was just asking if you would like sweet tea with dinner?" She asked a soft blush creeping on her cheeks.

"Please" My mother and I answered at the same time causing her to nod and close the door heading back inside.

"So" My mother spoke up turning her attention back to me.

"So what" I asked shoving my hands into my pockets.

"You are looking at that girl as if she was the prized pony at the county fair. Spill" My mother stated matter of factly jutting out her hip.

"We are friends that is all." I lied, I almost felt bad for lying as I had just made things right with my mother.

"Mhm keep lying little man" She called walking in the door.

"I'm not lying Ma!" I called after her walking in behind her.

"Hi Laurel so nice to see you!" Let's rushed over and hugged her.

"I apologize I wasn't here to greet you! I was so whipped after my shift last night. I have been a horrible hostess so far" Leta grovled almost frantic.

"It's fine darlin' My little Mikey and I had to work some things out anywho" My mother smiled.

"Well good thing you two did because dinner is served" Rocko smiled carrying in a tray of grilled chicken.

"Oh goodie" My mother smiled giving me a devious smirk.

All of us sat around the table, Rocko at the head of the table and Leta in the chair next to my mother. Then myself next to Kennedy.

I felt a small hand on my leg just above my knee and looked over at Kennedy, who looked completely unaware of what she was doing.

However her actions came off as calming rather then as an attempt to get me riled up.

Beginning to fill our plates my mother kept glancing at Kennedy and I.

Just before she opened her mouth and spoke, my gut told me she was going to try and get Kennedy and I admit to whatever the hell was going on between us.

And boy was I right about that.

"So Kennedy tell me, do you and Cole get along" She questioned smirking at me.

Good god was this dinner going to hell and quick.
