Water

I sat down next to a lake. The water rushed by, and some leaves left the trees above. They flew over the water; some fell into the water, the rest managed to get over to the grass, on the other side. The fresh air hit my face nicely.

I had walked a couple of miles from the little town, yet I had not seen any signs of human beings here. I was wondering how far those men went, considering that it sounded like they were close enough to stop by the town whenever they wanted.

I removed my shoes as I was thinking; and also removed my socks. I put my feet down in the water and felt as the pain of my wandering disappeared. I breathed out as it did so; and everything from the past few days disappeared. I felt alive again.

"Well..." someone's voice hit my ears, and I opened my eyes in a hurry. "What do we have here?" It was a man. I turned around and saw a tall, white man, with brown hair, and a pretty long beard. He had a brown coat on, and a pair of black jeans.

"O-oh," my voice cracked. I hadn't spoken for days. "I'm s-so sorry. I never meant-"
"Don't worry," he smiled, and walked closer to me. "What's your name?" He asked.
"(y/n)" I said softly, as my voice started to get used to talking again.
"That's a pretty name," He smiled and held out his hand. I grabbed it, and he helped me up.
"Thanks," I smiled, and my cheeks felt hotter as I did.

I grabbed my socks, and shoes and hurriedly put them on as he watched.

"Where did you come from?" He asked softly as I finished putting on my shoes.
"A city near this one," I answered. "My old camp got attacked, and I just... ran. I accidentally entered this town as I did..." I said. "I'm sorry..."

He smiled and grabbed my hand, we walked over to a white truck, and then he answered what I said:

"It's okay, don't worry about it," He looked at me. "I'm guessing you entered the town a couple of miles from here?" I nodded, and as I opened my mouth to apologize, he smiled again. "That's good. We thought some of the... things had entered, and I'm glad to know that it wasn't," he opened the passenger door, and I went inside. I sat down on the black seat, and watched as he closed the door behind me.

He sat down in his own seat, and started the car after he had closed his door. He reversed, and turned. He drove up the small dirt path, and was soon on the bigger road.

"My name is John, by the way," he said as he kept his attention on the road. "We have a camp near, and we could use someone new," He turned, and looked at me for a quick second before turning his eyes back onto the road. He smiled as he did so.

"Oh, thank you, so much!" I said, and smiled back at him. "I'll do anything!"

He gave me a smile as a response, and the rest of the ride was silent. I watched out of the window as he drove, I saw some of those things beside the road as we passed. John had a little notepad over the radio, on the right side of the steering wheel, and a pen was hanging on the left side of the notepad. The pen had a rope around it, and it was glued onto the dashboard so it wouldn't get lost. John drew a small line for every zombie he saw.

We got closer to some sort of big wall, and I soon realized that it was some sort of barrier around a massive house.

"Before the fall," John started. "I owned this ranch," he pointed at the building. "So we decided to set our camp here, and we built the walls around it," he explained, and stopped the car. He opened the door and stepped out.

"Open!" he yelled, and another guy looked over the wall. He had ginger hair, and also a beard. I guessed that they had built some sort of railing they could stand on, so they could look over the walls. He nodded at John, and a gate slowly opened. John got back into the car and drove in.

I stepped out of the car, and the man with ginger hair and beard emerged from the wall and looked at me.

"Who's this?" he asked John.
"Oh, this is (y/n) ," he said. The man nodded and looked at me.
"I'm Jacob, John's older brother" he nodded at me too, and left for the wall again.
"If you go over there -" John pointed at a guy that looked oddly similar to John, but instead he had his hair up in a man-bun. "He'll help you move in," he smiled and walked away.

[John]

I walked away from the newcomer and walked up to the wall. I stopped walking right as I neared Jacob. He looked at me, and I knew what he was going to ask.

"Who's that?" He asked, I walked up to him, and stood next to him while looking out over the wall.

"I found them while driving, I thought they might be useful," I said shortly, while glancing at him. He kept looking over the wall as he answered.

"I hope you're right," he turned his head toward me, "we need to do a complete background check,"

"Why? They look worn out, I'm sure they aren't a threat," I looked down at my feet; Jacob sighed.

"We don't know that yet, it's just safety protocol,"  He walked up to one of the men that were standing on the wall, whispered something, and then walked up to me. "Let's go,"

We continued down to the ground, and up to Joseph; who was standing with (y/n)...
