A few days had passed since the incident, and I attempted to move forward and put it behind me.
But I still wanted to pursue myself as a fighter.
So, with my 50 coins and the money I received from working at the lady's restaurant, I went straight to the armor shop to purchase myself a few things.
I entered the building holding the sword in my hand... I was immediately the center of attention.
I heard snickering.
{Owner of the store} Hey boy, let me know if you need help with anything or are interested in.
I nod.
I began to look around the store, and I noticed that many of these things were really out of my budget.
I'm never going to find anything here.
I sigh.
I then noticed in the back there was a clearance rack.
I head towards it, and suddenly, two guys jump in front of me.
"What's someone like you doing with a sword like that?" they laughed, shoving me back.
"Aye!! Both of you! Take that outside!" The owner shouts.
They both laughed and walked away from me.
I ignored their foolish acts and noticed that on the table, they were selling a shoulder strap and a waist strap sword holder.
They were really worn down, but for only 20 coins, I could manage that.
That would leave me with 30 coins left..
That should be all I need.
I start to head to the register, and out of the corner of my eye, I see something that catches my eye.
It was a black cape with a hood; I touched the fabric, astonished by how smooth and clean it was.
I checked the tag and noticed it was 150 coins. it was way out of budget.
"Aye, boy, are you interested in this?"
I turn around to notice the store owner behind me.
"Try it on." He grabs the cape down, handing it to me.
"I can't .. I don't have enough." I lower my head, mumbling my words as I try as much as I can not to sound like a girl.
"Hm. Are you trying to become a fighter? with a sword like that, I sure hope you are." He asks.
"Yes."
He then places the hood on my head.
"How about when you earn the money back, you give me what you owe."
He then slips a small knife into the pocket of the cape, "You'll need that if you're going to buy the waist holder."
I reach into my pocket and give him the 20 coins.
"Thank you.. I really appreciate it. I promise to pay you back from anything I earn!!"
"Good luck, kid."
I have to make sure I pay him back; he was kind to do me this favor, and I had to return home alive to make sure he knew I would re-pay him.
Because people are counting on me, just as he was.
I left the store, draping the cape over me and securing the sword holder around my waist. I placed my sword in the holder and the small knife in the waist holder that had been given to me.
I smiled. Why was I actually smiling? I hadn't felt myself do that in a long time.
Belle clutched her fists, Now time to go register to become a fighter.
A carriage of fruits was passing by, and it was heading straight to where I needed to go.
"Out of the way! This food is for the people who actually do something!" the guy shouts, yelling at everyone to move out of the way.
This could be my only chance.
I run after it and jump inside as quietly as possible.
Hmm.. this could come in handy. I grabbed some fruits and put them inside my cape, leaving five coins on the side, Leaving me at 25, which should be fine.
An hour passed, welcoming me to come to a rough stop. My head banged against the carriage, immediately waking me up.
I peek my head out of the carriage and see people. No fighters are standing there, ready to go inside the forest.
Woah.
I quickly exit the carriage without drawing any attention and notice a long line of people waiting to register as fighters.
I noticed kids just 9 years old being escorted out of the premises. They were crying and begging to let them join: "Please, we don't have any money!"
I felt bad.. but maybe once I have enough I can help kids like them.
So I did the only thing I could: I stood in the back of the line, waiting for my turn to join the fighters' ranks.
As we were waiting in line medics were running out of the forest along with 4 people that were badly injured.
One killed.
And others bleeding out.
I gasp as they just laid them on the ground.
They weren't doing anything to save them!
They were still alive! And they were just going to let them bleed out and die.
Suddenly, a group of Elite fighters comes along, showing no interest in the people lying there; they just walk right past them. It was as if this was a normal thing like the lives of others didn't matter.
"Your not gonna do anything?" I shouted, almost stopping myself, but I knew something had to be said.
Everyone looked at me as these so-called Elite fighters turned towards me, seeming slightly annoyed that I even talked to them.
"What?"
"They're still alive." I say confidently.
"Why would we?" He says coming closer.
"Stop right there. Unless you want this news to come out, why would anyone want to rank to the fighters or join if they find out you're not doing anything to protect us if we were hurt?" I clutched tighter to my fists. What I said was right; I knew it was.
They were staring at each other, and then I noticed that the guy who had given me the sword was standing there with them.
He noticed me.
The guy that approached me glanced over at the medics.
"What are you waiting for?! Help them. Do your job better. What are you getting paid for?! " he shouts. Looking back at me, he rolls his eyes and walks away.
The one who had given me his sword kept staring at me and gave me what almost seemed like a smile.
I shake my head as I turn back to my place in line."Good job, kid." The guy in front of me says giving me a a soft punch on the shoulder.
"Yeah, good job."
Others joined alongside him, clapping at me for standing up for us.
We were risking our lives for this we shouldn't be treated as if we didn't matter.
