Four weeks later...
Being careful of my new found strength I took Joey on in in some hand to hand combat before he told me about the surprise he had planned. I had to be careful about how hard I flexed my muscles and how fast I moved because I was more than capable of crushing tempered steel with zero effort, not to mention that I could go from 0-60 in less than a second. Due to a loss in concentration I managed to punch a hole through a tree that was right next to Joey's head, I pulled back and he told me take five.
" You've come far young grass hopper." Joey said kind of out of breath "Now go change and shower I've had enough near death experiences for one day."
I rolled my eyes "drama queen you've only had one today not even that."
"If you want your surprise you better behave." He said
I smirked "yes sir."
...
I watched as she walked away, she had advanced so quickly but now it was time for her to leave. With a week left before the launching of this project I had gotten the entire staff on board with Laurens 'escape' back to her family. I was doing this for more than one reason the first is so that she can hopefully save her family and the second is because there is no cure, she was just naturally resistant. The longer it took her to figure that out the better her chances of saving more lives in hopes of giving them a vaccine.
I sighed as I started some last minute preparations, guilt eating at me because there was no cure, but I pushed it down and made sure Laurens escape was as easy as possible without looking suspicious. Her creepy good telepathic powers would be a good alibi for knocking out the human guards, but the electronic sentries would be a different issue, unless she had figured out how to manifest some kind of shield and didn't tell me, she would have to figure out how to get by the electronic sentries and doors on her own but her new found strength should barley get her out...hopefully.
I pulled out my holo pad as I walked to the meeting room where we would do final preparations for Laurens escape using computers and messages that could pass as code. "Okay I" typed "is everyone in the room?"
After a variation of affirmations, I continued "Is Kathy distracted?" If she wasn't our whole plan would be spoiled because she was the biggest snitch.
Again I got an affirmation "Rob you have the keys right?"
"Yeah, let's just hope she comes to me to get them and doesn't try to split on foot."
"I will explain as much to her as I can mentally so don't worry about that."
"Looks like we are a go."
...
I stepped out of the shower just as Joey walked in, he flushed red and turned his back on me mumbling something akin to an apology then I reached out mentally.
"Put these on." He said tossing a jump suit over his shoulder "then I will tell you about your surprise on the way there."
I pulled on the black jumper that fit perfectly and was as soft as satin yet light as air. "Okay." I said keeping to the mental form of speech.
"Good, now act natural, you are going to see your family."
"What?" I asked "they are here in the building?"
"No the staff and I have engendered your escape. Act natural, when we get to the cafeteria door fake elbow my ribs then I will give you directions to the garage where you will steal a set of car keys from Rob then hightail it home, you will have the remainder of this week then Monday of next to save your family and friends."
"This is wild." I said " How are we going to get away with this?"
"simple, we keep it strictly telepathic and you make you escape look convincing."
"What about S13?"
"He will find you after the outbreak starts."
finally, we made it to the cafeteria and I threw an elbow into Joeys ribs and sprinted through the door while he gave me directions to cut to the door on the left side of the cafeteria, then to go right at the next intersection where I would encounter the first of the guards. I skidded to a halt as the guard's game down the hall then suddenly dropped, I went with it and sprinted on guards dropping as I sprinted by then froze as I came to a hall with wicked looking guns jutting out of the walls. I could hear the guards a few halls back closing in on me, so I could either charge the hall of guns and die or get recaptured, I was fast but was I faster than a bullet? Guess I was about to find out.
I shot into motion going from zero to everything in less than a second waiting to feel the bullets biting into my flesh but they only pinged to the ground a few inches from me, the hall felt long but finally I got out of it and ran head long into a steel hydraulic door with garage written above it. I sucked in a breath feeling S13 in the back of my head I stuck my fingertips in the minuscule crack in the door and pulled it open slowly, feeling the hydraulics fighting me, but I only needed it open about a foot or so. I slipped through and they closed shut behind me only to leave me facing Rob who had a gun pointed at me, who abruptly fell over. I quickly searched him and found a set keys, but not for a car, Joey was not making this easy so I took they keys and tried them at the room Joey directed me too.
I pulled random keys off the rack until I found a familiar looking Chevy symbol then took off pressing the unlock button until I reached a big black truck with flood lights on it and an extended cab with a huge bed and a GPS inside. I had never driven anything this big, but I had no clue how much time I had to get out of here so I took the opportunity and hoped in following the exit signs to another set of hydraulic doors. I got out and sighed, there was no way I was going to get that door open wide enough for the duly behind me. I looked at both sides of the door and on the right side I found an open switch that I quickly flipped. As soon as the doors were open wide enough I pulled out and sped off, busting through a gate then continuing at top speed, punching my address into the GPS, I drove well into the night before pulling off at a Walmart then staring at the big FL. on the GPS that signified the state I was in. I put the seat back and closed my eyes trying to get some sleep before the sun came up.
I got out of the truck the next day and keeping my head down went in to use the bathroom then went back to the truck. I drove the entire day keeping to the speed limit and following all the rules of the road in an attempt to not get pulled over. Calling me tense was an understatement I felt like I was committing a major crime by driving without a license in a stolen vehicle, then again I was, but only to reach my family. Was it still as bad a crime if it was for a good cause? I had no clue but I kept going stopping only for bathroom breaks. At about sunset the gas gauge hit the empty line and the fuel light flipped on followed by a message on the screen.
You have the option to switch to solar power
You have 100% power stored would you like to switch?I hit the no button deciding that I would drive until all the gas was gone before switching over, besides I had only about five hours to go and there was no telling how long the solar would last what with the sun going down and everything. So I drove on until the truck decided to run out of gas at which point I decided to get some shut eye before driving the last leg to my family and hopefully saving their lives.
