Chapter 8: The Tsunami

*Iida POV*

Moments after a massive mushroom cloud engulfs the horizon, I get a warning from the dome that a tsunami is probably headed for Japan. Must be that explosion, what could have caused something that massive?! No Tenya, no distractions, focus. Who can help..? I quickly dial a number on my phone and put it up to my ear. "Froppy! Are you near the southern border?" I ask, "Yeah, I'm with the Oki Mariner crew down here, based on that blast there is definitely going to be a big tsunami. We are trying to keep an eye on the sea while evacuating, but depending on the wave size...it might be pointless." She explains, "I'm on my way. I'll try and get as many out as I can." "Head to western Kyushu. Please get people as far as possible." Tsuyu hangs up, and I start running as fast as I can.

Seven hours pass, all along I work to get citizens out with Mandalay and Ragdoll. All around the coast, Mudman, Welder, Plamo, and Pixie-Bob work to fortify whatever they can. Froppy and the Oki Mariner crew keep constant eyes on the massive wave approaching. "Ingenium! This is Selkie, can you hear me?" I hear my earpiece crackle to life, Though the message is muffled. "Yes, I can!" "The tsunami is about to hit land! Our boat just went down out of nowhere, me and Froppy are trying to outswim the wave, but it ain't lookin good!" He shouts, "I'm on my way!" I initiate recipro turbo, and start blasting through the streets, heading for the coastline. "Stay back, Ingenium! if you get caught up in this, you aren't getting out!" Selkie warns, "I'm gonna have to let you go, send me your coordinates." I hang up before he can respond, and contact the search and rescue team. "Everyone out! The tsunami is about to hit!" Then immediately switch to the fortification team. "Where are you guys?! Do you have some sort of shelter?!" "Yes, we are using our quirks to keep a small room secure." Mudman explains, "I'm almost there, be ready to give me a small opening." Mudman grunts in approval, and I dial (Y/n). "The tsunami is making contact! The dome should be safe, but be prepared just in case!"

Within minutes I can locate Selkie and Froppy in the water, a massive wave mere feet behind them. I can make it. I can make it. I can make it. Maybe. Before I can weigh my choices, I see Froppy start to slow, and jump into immediate action. Pouring everything I have left into my engines, I am able to blast through the water, similar to a boat. "Take my hands!" Selkie is able to grab my hand, while Froppy wraps her tongue around my wrist. I turn around quickly, and with the tsunami right on my tail, I blast towards the shelter. "MUDMAN!" I scream while approaching. A small hole opens in the side of a hill, and I see Pixie-Bob in the doorway waving me over. Time seems to slow down, as all at once, I feel tsuyu grab my hand firmly, now with her own. I feel myself start to slow slightly, the extra weight is too much after almost a full day without sleep, and the water starts pulling tighter against us, slowing me further. "We aren't going to make it..." I whisper under my breath. "Get her to safety, kid." as I feel Selkie let go and push away from me, I glance back and see him give Tsuyu a smile, before being swallowed by the massive wave, barely a foot behind us. I need to make it. I can make it. I will make it! My engines start stalling, but without Selkie's weight, we are barely able to dive into the shelter, Pixie-Bob closing it up again behind us.

"Are you two okay?! Where is everyone else?!" Plamo asks, "Sirius and the crew of the Oki Mariner went down with the ship, there was no way they could have out-swam the wave. Selkie sacrificed himself...for us." Tsuyu says through tears. "Ragdoll and Mandalay?" Pixie-Bob asks anxiously, "I don't know. Why don't you radio them?" I suggest, laying down on my back. "No service in here, unfortunately." Welder explains. "Dammit. They should be fine, they are with the refugees." I say hopefully. "Right now we have bigger problems. This room is absolutely water-proof, but also air-proof. So we are on a time limit." Mudman explains, "How long?" Tsuyu asks, "Maybe two hours?" Mudman says, clearly guessing. "Then I suppose we wait."

The time goes by quickly. 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30, 45, soon enough we hit the hour mark. Me and Tsuyu find ourselves sitting next to each other against the wall, while the others continue using their quirks to ensure our short-term safety. "Thank you, Tenya. You didn't have to come back for me." Tsuyu says quietly, "Of course I did. I couldn't just let you die, could I?" she chuckles a bit, before resting her head on my shoulder. "I know we said we wanted to focus on hero work...but at least until we get out of here, I love you." She kisses my cheek and I feel warm tears against my neck. "Of course. I love you too." I kiss her forehead, and we resign ourselves to our fate while enjoying each others warmth.
