FLASHBACK
Nayab
"Pyar hogaya hai...shayad." Hamdan glanced at me playfully as we walked across the soft grass, staring up at the stunning backdrop of Islamabad.
*"I think I'm in love... maybe."
"Oh really? Aur is nateejay pe kis tarhan pohanche?" I asked.
*"And how did you reach this conclusion?"
This was my first time out with him, away from the Gillani mansion.
"I thought things through, analysed them mentally from every aspect and angle. It was a long and difficult process, but I have finally reached the conclusion." He grinned.
"Are you talking about love or scientific research?"
"The chemistry between a couple, the pounding of the heart at the proximity...isn't it all science?" He stopped in his tracks, making me stop as well. "I don't want to sound cliché, but the fact is that you don't make me feel like the son of a powerful political family. You take me away from all of that to a blissful place."
"It's not me, Hamdan. It's you. It's your own down-to-earth, caring nature. Your desire to fight for justice. You yourself have separated yourself from the dirty world of politics, in the best way possible." I whispered. A little cool breeze made me shiver slightly, and the grey clouds overhead threatened rain.
"Careful, Nayab. It sounds like you love me too." He stepped closer to me and I smelled the strong scent of his cologne.
"Is that your confession then?" I raised an eyebrow at him. Suddenly my eyes widened as I spotted something over his shoulder. "Oh look! They are selling pakoray and tea! Come! It's the perfect combination for a rainy weather!" I began to rush towards the edge of the park.
*Pakora: a deep fried snack, dipped in batter, often stuffed with potatoes or other vegetables.
"I'm trying to tell you how I feel and you want pakoray?" He laughed.
The truth was that I was afraid of my feelings for him and vice versa. I honestly didn't see a future for us, and it broke my heart. I even questioned myself why I was spending so much time with him if things seemed hopeless for us, but I just couldn't stay away.
Samreen Gillani would never allow us to be together, but even the thought of Hamdan Gillani would not let me stay away from him. I felt like I was tangled up in a web, unable to free myself.
"Look, Hamdan...it's very difficult for us to be together. Your mother would..." I pictured scenes from films and dramas I'd seen where politicians wiped off entire families without a second thought. My heart shattered in a billion pieces at the idea of anything happening to Ammi or Nafeesa, simply because I fell for the son of a politician.
"Answer me one thing, Nayab." He spoke quietly. "Would you be able to move on with someone else? If you can honestly answer that question with a 'yes', I will back away."
"I can't answer that unless I try..." I whispered.
The hurt on his face broke my heart, and he nodded. "I understand."
"But I don't want to try." I added. "I love you, Hamdan."
"Mujhe bhi tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai, Nayab. Nikah karogi mujhse?" He said, huskily as he stared directly into my eyes.
