Half an hour after our meeting with a bunch of really bad people, I found myself on a roof. This for me was not unusual. What was unusual was the gaggle of kids around me also perched on the same roof.
"Alright, as you all know, one of the basic tennants of villain or hero work is that people don't look up. You know this, so does everybody else. While the new members today haven't been taking the earlier lessons, I'm told you can keep up. So today we practice stealth."
The moment Misty had brought us to the training camp had been confusing to say the least. Lady Shiva had looked at Misty, walked up to her, casually slapped the younger woman! Then started a tirade of "You little wench, that statue you took was not the bribe I'd set out for you and you know it!"
Misty had not even been remotely ashamed for whatever it was she had done, nore did she apparently need to. Moments later the Lady had pulled Misty towards her, kissing her forehead before the embraced.
Shiva called Misty "Kid"and now she lounged on another roof, on a thin matress as he lesson took place. if I had to guess, Misty had been a former student of the Lady.
The guns the sharp shooters below are all airsoft, but as usual you get hit, you're out. The idea is to reach the other end of the compound without being seen, shot or touching foot to ground! Begin!"
On our roof, Ray, out of his villain costume and wearing super tight jeans and a loud tee that had the words "Charming and Dangerous" on them, had actually managed to get myself and Marcia into a team together. Claire had been told not to cheat and put in a team with two kids who carried bows and arrows. They ere at least dressed like ninja, unlike us.
"You two better not slow me down!" Miss A was saying, "The sooner i get this course over with the sooner I can go back to field work!"
The race was fast, and didn't take a lot of effort. Naturally Claire cheated, using just enough of her power to conceal herself and making a straight cut around the west side of the compound. Miss A moved like a tank! There was no attempt to conceal at all, simply running and jumping and relying on reflexes to either dodge or shield against the paintballs.
"She missing the point of the exercise!" I observed as Ray and I flanked around the right side, following at a distance and keeping to the shadows. I wasn't that good at this, not in human form. Normally I would have just flown over the buildings, completely inconspicuous as a green hawk, or something.
"She's trying to brute force everything! It's what she does in our sparring sessions too, she's more likely to take hits cause she's too busy trying to strike me." Ray seamed sad as he spoke. "Always remember Garf, the one who raises their voice, or strikes first. They're always the one in the wrong. Whatever the reason!"
I blinked as we made our way across, and realised to late that I'd been pinged with paint to the back. Grudgingly I joined the small group of losers on the ground and headed to the centre of the compound.
In all told the training session didn't last long, maybe five hours so that it was dusk when we finished. We took turns sparring, then shows any skills we had with locks. Obviously Claire was good at all of these, but even Ray struggled. Until I noticed, he was holding back. Miss A constantly put herself up in opposition to him, and every time he held back.
I wondered if she could see that?
Over the coarse of the Training Misty eventually vanished, we wouldn't be needing a ride back anyhow and the three of us saw first hand as Miss A went from annoyed, to angry to Furious over the day.
As the others all left, exactly what he'd hoped happened exactly as we wished. "What do You three FREAKS think you're doing, trying to show me up and mess with my head! This isn't some game where you can play, this is Serious Business!"
Claire tried to rush in, but was given the hand with a clear, "Oh no you don't miss Cute Puke, I'm not listening or looking at you!" Instead Marcia marched up to us. "A couple of months ago you were a fricking nerd. Now I'm expected to believe your on my level! Who did your villain parents pay off to get you here!"
Ray and I looked at each other, then cracked up laughing and I joked, "Well she's half right."
"But completely wrong. No paying, but yes I did cheat!" Ray finished. Somehow he'd gotten his shirt off, and wore it across his neck like a towel to show off his abs. Although only his abs, the button up had been over a crop top? "Why, you upset you didn't get the same benefits? Maybe you and I should Spar, one on one!"
Yes! The perfect plan, he could stalemate her, keep her here until the assassination attempt was over. Conveniently, I noticed Claire took this moment to vanish, no doubt intending to tell Marcia's driver to 'head home' and send off the all-clear.
This wasn't going to be a clean fight, neither of them were armed and Miss A fought like a tiger, using fast sharp hits and kicks which Ray occasionally dodged. Several times he took the hit, using the momentum to throw himself around the field. His fun trick was using that momentum to change from low attacks, to leg sweeps to shoves, bodily charging Miss A to give her air and throw her.
That was when Miss A's phone rang for the first time.
"Hold up!" She demanded, stopping to reach for it and, as I'd been forgotten I took my shot. While Miss A had been focusing on Ray, I'd gone Eagle. Yes, a green bird but still a sizable bird of prey. Swooping in, I stole the girls phone before she could answer it!
"Oh NO You don't Dumb Bird!" The chase was on.
