eddie and rhiannon snapped out of their trance after watching patrick do the chrissy crumble, and eddie pulled rhiannon out of the boat into the water. the shock of the cold water made rhiannon gasp on impact, subsequently making her choke as water got caught in her throat.

panicked, she began to cough and splutter, flailing her arms around desperately, trying to swim. eddie was slightly ahead, swimming away. he thought she was right behind him.

"eddie!" rhiannon shouted between coughs. her throat felt scratchy and it burned.

eddie turned around and bobbed in the water.

"eddie, i-i can't swim." she desperately tried to keep her head above the water, but she kept swallowing the foul water as she tried to breathe.

eddie made his way back to her, and he wrapped his arm under her shoulders to hold her steady. "it's okay, i got ya." slowly, he started swimming with his free arm, pulling rhiannon along with him. rhiannon moved her other arm to help eddie the best she could.

after a while of co-ordinated swimming, they reached the bank and hauled themselves up onto land. they both lay on their backs, catching their breath. eddie rolled over to face her. "you okay?"

she nodded. "never better." eddie scoffed at her resilience, how she was able to be sarcastic even at a time like this. he stood up and offered her a hand. gratefully, she took it, and eddie pulled her up, so their faces were inches away once more.

they maintained eye contact for a tense moment, and then rhiannon pulled eddie into a tight hug. "thank you." she mumbled into his shoulder.

"what for?"

"for keeping me going. i would've drowned if you hadn't helped me. i would've drowned a long time ago if you hadn't come along." eddie buried his nose in her blonde hair and inhaled. she smelt like dirty lake water and sweat, nothing particularly nice, but he was just glad to be with her, through everything. it was rhiannon that had kept him going, rhiannon that had stopped him from giving up. he had never cared about anybody the way he cared about her, and it honestly scared him. but he knew if he wasn't with her, he could never be happy. rhiannon was the sun that his world orbited.

he pressed a kiss to her forehead, closing his eyes. then, he pulled her forward, intertwining their hands. "c'mon. i know a place we can go."

rhiannon followed. she would follow him anywhere.

eddie took rhiannon to skull rock, a place she recognised from all the tall tales that were told by steve about all the girls he'd taken there to make out with. he even took her one time, not to make out, but just a place to hang out by themselves.
