10. 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦

the group were currently following dustin around in the darkness, watching him as he relied on his compass to get them to the supposed gate they were looking for.

he stopped for a moment and stared at the compass needle spinning around wildly. "something's happening..." he muttered to himself before picking up his pace and marching on, the others traipsing behind him.

"dustin? can you slow down? dustin!" eddie called out to the younger boy. dustin ignored him and carried on.

"i think we're getting close!" dustin called behind him.

eddie sprinted to catch up to him, just in time, as dustin was too occupied with staring at the compass to notice that he was about to walk straight into the lake. eddie grabbed him by his shoulders to stop him from falling in. "woah, there, big guy."

"oh man. you gotta be shitting me."

"i thought these woods were familiar."

"lover's lake." robin remarked.

"this is... confounding." dustin added.

"there's a gate in lover's lake?" max questioned, staring out over the surface of the water like the rest of the group, looking for telltale slimy vines or floating particles anywhere. there was nothing out-of-this-world about it.

"whenever the demogorgon attacked, it always left an opening. maybe vecna's the same way." said nancy.

"yeah, only one way to find out." rhiannon grumbled, knowing what was coming next.

eddie, given no choice in the matter, was forced by an intimidating robin and persistently annoying steve to reveal the location of where him and rhiannon had stashed the boat after escaping lover's lake for the first time.

together, steve and eddie pushed the boat into the water. they weren't the most... coordinated, let's say.

when it was good to go, robin stepped into the boat, followed by nancy, eddie, and then steve. eddie held his hand out to rhiannon. "don't be shy, sweetheart. come for a nice relaxing boat ride with me." rolling her eyes at his teasing, she grabbed his hand and allowed him to pull her into the boat. as she got in, the boat rocked at the weight of the five people, tipping rhiannon into eddie's chest. by reflex, eddie wrapped his arms around her back, pulling her close to him. rhiannon could feel a blush rise to her cheeks at the embarrassing moment, but also because of how close she was to eddie.

dustin watched them and wondered when they had started dating and why they hadn't said anything to him yet. it felt like his parents had finally gotten together, just like he had always wanted.

dustin went to get into the boat when eddie put his hands up to stop him. "hey, hey, hey, are you trying to sink us? this thing holds five people, tops." dustin looked offended.
