"Should we get cornflakes or porridge?"
I sigh. We're nearly done with shopping. Thank God. I feel like I might voluntarily melt onto the hard supermarket floor. Lily doesn't notice.
Lily is wearing a white vest top with a red, long, flowy skirt. And a tote bag. Because no hippie is complete without a tote bag. Now she's reaching for the top shelf, where the cornflakes are. Some of her hair's escaping out of her bandana.
I'm glad she's getting cornflakes though. I can't really be arsed to make porridge on a morning. It's a lot of effort. And I don't make a lot of effort at mornings. Plus, it just tastes okay. Like it isn't great, but you can't really say it's shit either. If you get what I mean. You probably don't.
"Where's Aggie?"
"She speaks!" Lily whips round, sees my confused expression and says, "You were doing that thing where you zone out and stare into space."
"Oh. Sorry."
Lily chuckles. "Don't say sorry. You have nothing to be sorry for. Everyone zones out, you just seem to do it a lot. Besides, I think it's cute."
I roll my eyes. She sees. "Awww. It's so easy to annoy you Fae. You do know that right?"
"Where's Aggie?"
"Not sure. Probably getting that shampoo of her's. She forgot it when we were there earlier."
"I'm here."Aggie calls from the end of the aisle. She comes rushing towards us, carrying two shampoo bottles. She's wearing a long, floral summer dress. She looks lovely.
"Speak of the devil." Lily smirks.
Aggie looks like she would tell Lily off, but she doesn't. I think she decides that would be too harsh of her, so instead she just giggles. We go to the checkout and pay for our things. We load our bags into the van and set off the whole five minute drive back home. We're all silent, until Lily says:
"Don't you think we should name this car? I mean, we always refer to it as 'the van' but I think it's too custom for that, don't you think?"
"You mean you painted a giant rainbow on it?"
"Yep. So: Any suggestions?"
"On what?"
"What to call the van?"
"Pride."
"That isn't even a name!"
"You have a giant mothertrucking rainbow on the side of it!"
"Mothertrucking?" Lily bursts out laughing.
"Yep. You know, in substitute for-"
"Enough. Why don't we call the van...um, Georgie?"
"Ew."
"Okay." I say. I like the name Georgie. I think it sums up the van perfectly well. As a vehicle a nursery student may have designed.Lily and Aggie keep bickering about stupid names as I turn and look outside of my window. It looks better in the daylight. Sure there is rubbish and graffiti and it's urban, but most places are nowadays. I don't really care.
We arrive home, and each of us struggles with two shopping bags each. Aggie starts unpacking things into cupboards and the one fridge we own, whilst I unpack the few things I bought.
My shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, that bitter shit you put on your nails so you can stop biting them even though it never works, and makeup remover.
I stare at my haul, feeling satisfied. Then there's a knock on the door.
