The classroom felt empty without Kakashi. Even though he didn't speak much in class, even though those two weren't sitting next to each other, the classroom still felt empty. Yes, Rin and Obito were still here, but they weren't him. Since he went on missions now, he stopped coming over for tea as often as he used to.
She felt alone surrounded by people. It was an odd feeling she wasn't used to. She has been alone for a long time now, it shouldn't be a problem to go on a bit longer... Right?
Rin and y/n were waiting outside of the testing room. Obito went to try to graduate early to catch up to Kakashi.
"Aaaaaand?" Rin asked Obito as he started approaching the girls.
He just shook his head signaling no. Y/n felt bad for the boy, he's been trying so hard for so long just to fail.
"You'll get it next time, I'm sure!" y/n encouraged him with a soft smile.
"Hell yea I will! I'm not letting him get so ahead of me!" Obito was sure of himself.
She admired that about him. He was caring towards his friends, strong-willed, determined and never gave up on his dreams. And he was an undying optimist, unlike her pessimistic self. They were a bit more than a year older than her, it felt like she had those older siblings she always wanted to have.
"How about we go to Ichiraku for good luck?" she gave an idea.
"Yes! Who comes last pays!" Obito shouted as he started running and Rin followed.
"Oh no you don't" and she started to run after them.
"I guess you're paying Obito." the girls laughed when they got in front of the shop.
"I- I let you win! What kind of man lets girls pay?!" he started defending himself.
"Okay Obito, whatever you say." Rin chuckled and they enjoyed their ramen.
She enjoyed their chaotic moments. They made her forget about her loneliness at times.
"See you guys tomorrow!" she said going in a different direction from them.
When will he tell her, she wondered. It was painfully obvious how much Obito liked Rin. She wished Kakashi would look at her the way Obito looks at Rin, but she was also painfully aware how much Kakashi liked Rin too. A tear escaped her eyes. Quickly wiping it away, she unlocked the door of her apartment.
Without turning the lights on, she fell onto her couch, drowning in tears. Humming her brother's tune she quickly fell asleep. Little did she know, Kakashi was sitting at her kitchen table. He wanted to surprise her as he came back from another mission. But he froze when she came inside, obviously not noticing him.
As she fell asleep he brought her a blanket. He decided that he'll write her a simple note and just leave, but before he left, he took a glance at her face. Even though it was drenched with tears, she looked so beautifully peaceful. Taking off his mask, he gave her a small kiss on the forehead and left.
Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz!
"Just five more minutes, mom."
Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz!
"Urgh! Fine! I'm up!" she yelled.
She looked at the clock and it said 7:45 am. Someone was buzzing at her front door, then she realized.
"I'M LATE!" she quickly changed into her usual clothes.
She didn't have time to see the note, or that someone brought her a blanket, or any trace that Kakashi was here.
"What took you so long?" Rin and Obito asked in sync when she ran out the door.
"Sorry..." she said with a chuckle.
"Wait, I think I forgot something... It's fine, we can skip the first class. I'm sure they won't be mad. Come in." Rin gave her an disapproving look, but still proceeded to get inside.
Y/n started making some tea when Obito spoke.
"Hey, y/n! What's this?" he held a small piece of paper in his hand.
She took the paper in her hands and almost screamed. The text on the paper was simple, no long poems or love songs, there were 3 simple words and initials of a person:
~I am sorry~
~K.H.~She ran out of the door without a word and knocked on Kakashi's front door. Couple of seconds later he opened the door and she embraced him in a hug. Soon after, Rin and Obito ran after her.
"Welcome back." she whispered into his ear. Replying with a small nod he waived to Obito and Rin followed by his signature eye-smile.
~Time skip because I'm lazy~
"Aaaaaaand?" Rin was more excited than Obito.
He help up a diploma and his suit up with a huge grin on his face. The girls ran and hugged the blushing boy.
"We'll catch up next year." Rin reasured y/n who just nodded.
"How about I pay for the ramen this time?" a voice asked from the tree.
"Kakashi?!" the kids yelled in surprise, synced up.
He gracefully landed before them. He looked stronger since the last time they've seen him. His moves were easier and stronger, and it seems he gained some confidence. That just pissed Obito off, one moment all the attention was on him then Kakashi had to show up.
"C'mon Obito! Let's celebrate your graduation!" Rin called out.
"Yeah, sure." he said with a soft grin.
Just a little more, mom. Just a little more, dad. I'll come there and get you both out so we can live like a family we were supposed to be all these years. I miss you both so much.
After a few days, two men came to her apartment.
"Miss y/n?" one of them asked.
"Yes, that's me." surprised by the sudden visit, she let two men in. They had a message from the Hokage.
"You should sit down." the other man said when she started to prepare them tea.
"Why? What's the matter? Did something happen to my parents?"
The men just nodded slightly and handed her the report. Both of her parents were killed at the front. Her mother was missing an arm and had a huge hole in her chest. Her father was found a couple of yards away with his neck sliced open. Her knees almost gave up, but she sucked it up and escorted the men out of her apartment.
With her back turned to the door, she slid down, tears poring down her face as she held the report.
Why? Why them? Why us? Why me?
