Weeks passed. Kakashi was starting to warm up to reality again. With y/n's help he started to learn how to live on his own. They were first neighbors so naturally, they started to hang out more.
For the first couple of nights Kakashi would sleep over at y/n's because he couldn't sleep alone in an apartment. It would bring back bad memories so she would let him sleep on her couch. Every night, she would hum that low tune to make it easier for him to fall asleep.
Kakashi stared to go to the academy again. They were still years away from graduation, but Kakashi wanted to finish it early so he could make his own money and not live out of 3rd's charity money like the rest of the orphans. And he did succeed in that.
"Kakashi you did it!" Rin yelled as Kakashi approached them with a diploma.
"Tsk, as if that's hard." Obito complained. Their rivalry was cute yet annoying to y/n, she saw no reason behind it.
"Good job Kakashi, we're all very proud of you." y/n gave him a soft smile.
"How about I treat you people with ramen?" she announced not long after they started heading home.
Kakashi just gave a simple nod in response, followed with Obito's scream of joy.
"I'm not letting you pay for us all." Rin argued.
"Come on Rin, I've been saving for quite a while for this. I insist on paying." y/n replied to her with a chuckle.
"Shouldn't I be the one paying?" Kakashi said calmly.
"But Kakashi..." the girls cried in sync, but he didn't want to hear it.
He was aware of how much money y/n was spending on him. When his dad passed away she was basically taking care of him, she was spending her money on him. He realized how much weight she lost and how little sleep she was getting. Even though she didn't eat or sleep much before, this was getting out of hand.
When they came back to the apartment complex, Kakashi was too mad to even look at y/n. She refused to eat at all in the shop without a good reason. He thought it was his fault that she was financially struggling so much.
"What's up with you!?" he yelled when he jumped into her living room from the window.
"Wha-" she wasn't even able to finish the sentence when he appeared right in front of her. Inches from her face, it made her freeze. His eyes stopped shining again, it was pure fury and anger staring through her.
"What? Spit it out."
"Nothing." she said looking down and walking away from him.
He grabbed her wrist, turned around and locked it next to his hip.
"Stop it." she was trying to get out of his grasp.
"I want answers. Are you trying to die or something?" he was mad at her childish behavior. He was also worried.
"No! Please, just leave." she answered, pushing him away.
He took a step back. He knew if he pressed on she would start hating him, so he turned away to leave, but then he heard a loud thud. Next thing he saw was y/n on the floor, unconscious.
How long has it been? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? He wasn't sure, he only knew it was too long. Obito and Rin already came and left that day. Nobody else visited her but them. As if she didn't exist outside their little circle.
A machine started beeping, it made him snap back into reality. He called for a medic who just turned the machine off.
"It means she'll wake up soon. It'd be best if you stayed here." he said and left the room once again.
Kakashi's been sleeping on that chair for a week now that y/n's been in the hospital. He felt so guilty and mad at himself. She was there for him when he needed her most, so why wasn't he there for her too?
Grabbing her hand, he started talking: "Please, just wake up. I promise I will help you out more. I'll help you train and study if you need me. Just please don't be mad at me. Please... just... wake up..."
Tears started to slowly stream down his face as he held her hand tightly. His head felt heavy as he put it down on the bed. It felt like hours for him, but in reality it's barely been minutes. He felt her hand squeeze his. His head shot up so quickly he could have broken his neck.
She was looking at him with a soft smile formed on her lips, but her eyes were telling a different story. Her eyes held so much pain she had been hiding for so long.
"H-Hey. Why are you staring like you've seen a ghost?" she asked with a small chuckle.
"You're finally awake. You were out for a week. You had us all worried sick. Don't tell me that I look like I've seen a ghost!" she just chuckled.
"I'll call Rin and Obito over if you want to..." he started but she pulled him to sit down. Shaking her head in response, he sat back down. They shared this moment in comfortable silence.
The night started to fall, clearly neither of them was able to sleep. To her pleasant surprise, he started to hum the tune. Her green eyes widened as she looked at him. She could see a blush creeping from behind his mask. He was looking out the window, refusing to look her in the eyes. She just smiled as she slowly fell into deep sleep.
