-Y/N-
I didn't even hesitate to step in front of him and throw my hands around. I hid my face in the crook of his neck and held tight. Something about the way he smelled was so familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I didn't even realize I was shaking with a mixture of exhaustion and fear.
"Please help..." I whispered, not caring how weak I looked in this moment.
I could tell he was confused at first, but he slowly wrapped his arms around me.
"What do you want me to do?" He whispered back.
"Hey!" The man on the motorbike came to a stop behind Mattheo. Mattheo stepped away from me and turned towards him, but he kept a hold on my hand, not letting go.
"Can I help you?" Mattheo said in a deadly calm. Though his tone wasn't harsh, there was a threatening echo in his voice.
"Yeah, hand her over, I paid for her." The man said getting off his bike. Mattheo looked back at me in confusion.
"He thinks I'm some kind of prostitute... or something. But I was just standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. He just started chasing me after that." I explained quickly.
"I think it was perfect timing." The man gave a toothy grin as he stepped forward.
"Leave us alone." Mattheo stated simply and turned around, walking away, pulling me along.
"Yeah? And who are you to say that, boy?" The man said behind us.
Mattheo didn't answer and continued walking forward. I heard a scuffle of feet behind me. Before I could even process what was going on, Mattheo shoved me to the side with force. I caught myself before I hit the ground. But when I turned back, I saw that Mattheo had stopped the man's punch midway through.
The man was surprised that Mattheo, though being visibly smaller, had enough strength to hold back his punch. But he didn't stay stunned for too long. With his other hand, the man swung hard, striking Mattheo right in the face.
Mattheo staggered back, grasping his right cheek. When he removed his hand, I saw a deep gash. Mattheo gently touched the cut and then noticed the amount of blood on his finger. Instead of looking worried or hurt, a smile spread across his face, as if this were a game he enjoyed playing.
A chill travelled down my back.
Without warning, Mattheo launched forward, striking the man in his face. The man was surprised but was ready to punch Mattheo back. Mattheo didn't give him the chance. He instead took his other hand and undercut him in the gut.
The man doubled over in pain, clutching his mid-section. He was wheezing hard, and I saw drool drip out of his mouth, tinged red with blood. "Wait..." He put a hand up in surrender, but Mattheo didn't care.
Mattheo grabbed the top of the man's head and drove his knee into the man's face. The man crumpled to the floor, groaning in pain. Mattheo stepped forward, standing above him. Mattheo's eyes were dark and hard. The light of the alley cast harsh shadows on his face that made him look menacing. I was suddenly very fearful.
Mattheo pulled his leg up and stomped hard on the man's face.
Once.
Twice.
Thrice.
"Mattheo that's enough!" I grabbed his arm and pulled him back before he could do it again. He was still in his fighting headspace, so he pulled his arm from my grasp and grabbed it, ready to twist it.
