A.N. Okay, I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before or if you guys caught on yet, but everybody is human, especially the trolls. Gamzee doesn't get high and stuff yet and Karkat doesn't have a terrible sailor mouth either. These traits won't set in until later on in the story when they're teenagers. I'm mentioning all timeline kids, so that's why Dave is being raised by Bro, but Karkat also ran into teenager Dirk on his date with Gamzee. It's kinda weird, so I'm sorry. There's more that I feel like I should clear up, but this Author's Note is long enough haha. So, from this point on, things are gonna start to go downhill for Karkat and Gamzee.
************
Karkat layed awake that night, listening to Kankri's shallow breathing and his dad's footsteps down stairs as he went about the house, locking the doors, checking the windows, and turning off the lights before he could go lay down.
The room was pitch black, and his tired mind began to create shapes in the darkness. Getting paranoid, he got up, scrambling around on the scratchy carpet for his headphones. His fingertips brushed against some, the thin cords being pinched between his fingers. They might have been Kankri's, but he didn't care at this point in the night.
He crawled back into bed, plugging them into his mp3 player and scrolling for a song. Letting out a heavy sigh, he closed his eyes and tried to ignore the urge to check his phone. Eventually, urges won over, and he was leaning over the bed, picking it up and flipping it open. In the blinding light, he read out the bolded letters:
One New Message
From: Gamzee
His stomach fluttered and churned at the same time, but he didn't hesitate in clicking Okay. The box opened up, and Karkat began to hurriedly read.Hey, I know I just dropped you off and it's kinda late, but I wanted to let you know that I had fun. I hope to see you soon, sleep tight :o)
Snapping the phone shut, he layed back down onto his pillows, staring at the ceiling. It was a nice message, and he was happy to read it, but then again, he wished he didn't. Kankri's words and the snap of the homophobic slur from the blond from the fair kept making their way into his mind. The words made him feel weird, guilty, almost. Liking Gamzee was interesting, and kissing him brought a thrill, and when they held hands his palm would tingle. He didn't see nothing wrong with it, in all honesty. And his dad was encouraging too.
So if there was nothing wrong with liking his best friend, and his dad didn't disapprove, then why was it such a big deal to Kankri and that blond if he dated Gamzee? Why did he suddenly feel scared and wanting to break this off before it actually went anywhere? He and Gamzee had just kinda sorta gotten together, it would be a little unfair to break up with him now. But it would be worse if he continued this on for a couple more months, resulting in something that he wanted to avoid.
His eyes felt heavy, and he just wanted to go to sleep. Rolling onto his side, facing the wall so that his back was to Kankri, Karkat closed his eyes and decided on how to handle the situation.
************
When he had woken up the next morning, Kankri was standing in front of the mirror, brushing his hair, struggling with part, Karkat noticed. Kankri's red hoody was draped over one arm, and swung around wildly he sprayed on cologne. Sitting up on his arm, Karkat squinted in the light, confused as to what time it was. Kankri caught a glimpse of his younger brother in the mirror and glared slightly.
"So," he said, turning around and leaning on the desk, "How was your little date last night?" His tone held malice that Karkat definitely picked up on. Swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, he replied in thick, sleepy voice, "Fantastic. He kissed me a lot and walked me home."
The kissing part was only mentioned to bug Kankri, who curled his lip. Ignoring it, Karkat shoved his way past, making his way to the bathroom to relieve himself. Wherever Kankri was going, he hoped he would be gone soon, he didn't feel like putting up with the slight tension between them two.
Flushing the toilet, he glanced at himself briefly while passing by the mirror. Not too bad, he mused. He should probably brush his hair, but he didn't feel like it.
When he came back into the bedroom, Kankri handed him his phone, saying something about a new message before going downstairs and closing the front door behind him. Grateful that his older brother was gone, Karkat flipped open his phone, seeing a new message, just as Kankri has said. It was from Sollux.
Hey dude, you should totally come hang out, Tuna just got a new game and he's gonna let us play it if you show up before Latula.
He didn't feel like playing the game, or leaving the house in general, actually. Crawling back into bed, he quickly typed out:Sorry, I have to clean the house today. Maybe tomorrow.
Clicking send, he knew that he wouldn't be making any plans to hang out tomorrow either. Instead, he rolled onto his side with his thick blanket, closing his eyes and ignoring the vibration coming from the mattress shortly after.************
A.N. Boring chapter, I know ;-; but please tell me any ideas that you guys may have, I'd love to hear them :3 And by the way, you guys already know Gamzee and Karkat's future, but don't worry, I didn't forget about Kurloz and Kankri. They'll make amends in college :3
