Alex, Clover and the others had been listening attentively to the debate, when they noticed Sam suddenly take off down the hall.
"Where's Sam going?" Alex asked, perplexed by her friend's sudden move.
"Sam!" Clover exclaimed, readying herself to go after her.
"Wait, Clover," said Kennedy. "Let's all go together."
"That would be good since the debate is still in the introductory stages," Saraline agreed with the shake of the head.
Just at that moment, Wesley's wristwatch went off with a short beeping sound.
"Ahhh, I'd love to join you guys but that alarm reminds me that I have to leave right now," Wesley stated, taking a few nervy glances at his watch.
"Right now?! Aren't you going with us to check up on Sam?" Saraline questioned.
Wesley sucked in air audibly, with a slightly grieved look. "I can't anymore, it's urgent. See you guys later!"
And with that, he darted down the opposite direction of the hall.
Alex and Clover made puzzled gestures at each other and gazed at Kennedy and Saraline, but didn't ask any questions.
They also seemed confused by his actions. Well, Saraline seemed confused. Kennedy just stared at him with narrowed eyes.
As the group went down the hall in search of Sam, they saw a number of guards along the way, lying unconscious on the ground.
A strong flowery scent could be faintly perceived in the air as they kept walking. The concentration of the scent was steadily increasing with each step they took.
"Wh...what is this smell?" Alex murmured as she began to wobble a bit. "It's making me feel...nappy."
"Dang," Clover groaned, placing a hand on the wall as she came to a halt. "my head feels heavy,"
She felt a hand on her shoulder and saw Saraline wearing a respirator, with another one in her hand.
"Here," said Saraline.
Clover let out a breath in relief as she put on the breathing mask.
"What you two are smelling is the fragrance of scented primrose flowers," said Kennedy, helping Alex stand upright. He had a breathing mask on. "that, thoroughly mixed with highly concentrated sedative compounds."
Alex gratefully grabbed the mask that Kennedy had stretched out in his palm and quickly put it over her face.
"Thanks," said Alex.
Kennedy just nodded and they continued to walk.
Disturbed by what they had just seen and witnessed, Clover felt the need to hurry with her steps in search of Sam, which caused the others to do the same. They stopped before every room they came across along the way.
"She's not in here either," said Alex with the shake of the head as she came out of a room.
"That's the last room in this hall," said Kennedy. "And there aren't any more rooms in this side of the building. It's only the small lounge at the end of this hall."
"Yeah, but whatever or whoever caused this should also know that the lounge is a dead-end, right?" said Saraline.
"Well..." Kennedy opened his mouth to speak.
But then, the sudden breaking of glass came from further down.
The four didn't waste time and dashed towards the sound. They arrived in the small lounge area, only to see Sam lying face flat on the floor.
