"she's just a girl and she's on fire"
- girl on fire, alicia keys

The ticking of the clock echoes in my brain. Class nears the last 30 minutes. Mr. Ochoa sits quietly at his desk after making us do a bunch of icebreakers for the first hour. Now we're all just sitting around. Whether it be on our phones or talking to others. One group of girls talk amongst themselves. Giggling as they eye the circle of jocks across the room. I try to read my book but can't. I go back to the ticking of the clock. The second hand seems to be ticking slower and slower each time. I sigh out of boredom, leaning back into my chair. My mind wanders back to the encounter I had with Brooks.

I remember the teasing behind his eyes. The way they tricked me into letting him lean into me. Just thinking about how close he was sends my heart racing again. The delicate brush of his fingertips against my skin. The softness of his voice made my cheeks hot. A part of me knows it might not be the last time Brooks does something like that.

I snap out of the memory and flip open the book in my hand. Reading still isn't cutting it right now. I rub my eyes in frustration.

"Are you as bored as I am right now?" a voice from the desk next to me asked. I open my eyes and I'm greeted by the most inviting amber eyes.

"Hello? You ok?" Amber eyes asked. I examined this person further. Her sleek jet-black hair fell to the beginning of her hips. Her winged eyeliner could cut like a knife. She's all I wanted to be.

"Uh, yeah. I'm fine, sorry" I shrugged.

"No worries. Good book?" she motioned to my hand that clutched the flimsy paperback.

"I wouldn't know. My mind keeps racing and won't let me enjoy it" I remarked.

"I can relate. I swear, there's literally nothing to do in this class. I hate first days" Amber eyes huffed.

"Me too. Speaking of first days, is it your first day at Oceanside? I've never seen you around before" I stated.

"Yeah, my parents and I just moved from Vancouver about a couple of months ago. I'm Alicia by the way, Alicia Bentley" she introduced placing her hand towards me. I reached for her hand and shook it.

"Oh cool, I'm Selena, Selena Moore"

"Selena, like the singer?" Alicia questioned.

"Yeah, my mom was a huge fan of hers growing up. Hence the name".

"She must be a really cool person" Alicia stated.

"She is, especially in the times when she's not singing. Let me tell you that woman, can't hold a note to save her life. She's living proof that not all Filipinos can sing" I chortled.

"Oh totally relatable, my mom thinks she's Beyoncé" Alicia jokingly rolled her eyes. We both laughed, earning a look from Mr. Ochoa. Alicia and I say our silent sorry's.

"What about you, Alicia? Just like Alicia Keys?" I questioned. She chuckled slightly and shrugged.

"I don't really know. My dad just liked the name. Or maybe he was a girl on fire, I never asked" she joked. We both laugh again but Mr. Ochoa doesn't seem to notice.

Alicia and I end up getting to know each other for the rest of class. She's Canadian but her family is actually from the Philippines and moved to Vancouver before she was born. Now they're in California for her dad's new job. She says she misses it but says she's starting to like the new environment.

The familiar ring of the bell sounds breaking Alicia and me from our conversation.

"Keep up with the times and focus on the world! Also have a good rest of your first day, kids! You're excused" Mr. Ochoa states standing from his desk. Everyone begins to pack their bags and make their way out the door.

"Well that was a fun way to end the most boring hour and a half of my life" Alicia chuckled.

"Yeah thanks for that, I didn't think I'd make it out alive" I giggle, slinging my backpack onto my shoulders. We both make our way to the door as the last two.

"Wait before you leave, I'll give you my number. I could show you around or just help you get through the year" I exclaimed.

"Oh yeah, that would be awesome. Here" Alicia said handing me her phone. We swapped phones and inputted our numbers.

"Great, let me know if you need help with anything. Or just call me if you need someone to hang out with" I grinned giving Alicia back her phone.

"Thanks so much, I will probably be using your number a lot. I gonna need a lot of help, I can feel it" she chuckled.

"No worries, see you around" I waved walking to my next class. Alicia waved back before leaving for her next period. It was nice to meet someone new. Especially someone with a personality like hers. I just know we'll be good friends.
