"every look, every touch, makes me wanna give you my heart
- moonlight, ariana grandeThe warmth of the foyer crept around me as I stepped into my house after retrieving the mail. We spent forever scoping out our nearest Safeway to find the perfect flowers for mom's orders. From that and even the lively events of today, I'm exhausted. All I wanted to do was sleep. It was the longest first day ever.
Carelessly, I tossed today's mail on top of the counter. I turn to leave to my room but I'm interrupted as I hear our doorbell ring. An exasperated sigh escapes me as I go see who's at the door. I fling it open only to gaze into Brooks' familiar hazel eyes.
"Brooks? What are you doing here?" I questioned.
Even though I was tired, I had to see what he was here for. Was he gonna tell me how upset he was at me? That it was my fault his fight started? Or that he's mad because I messed up his girlfriend's face? I braced myself for all of it. Even though I'm slightly angry at him for not jumping into my quarrel with Madison, I still care.
"I'm sorry"
Huh?
Brooks' gaze continued, unwavering as he stared directly into my eyes. His hands clasped and unclasped at his sides. His breathing was long and hard as if he'd sprinted from his house to mine. I couldn't help but notice the lasting cut on his lower lip from Dean's fist. It was still a little swollen but better than when I saw it last.
"I'm sorry Selena," Brooks expressed out of breath, "I'm sorry for everything that happened today".
Still, I was looking at him dumbfounded, unable to respond as I tried to grasp his apology. Brooks looks down at his shoes as he continues to fidget with his fists. He looked like a scared little kid who just got in trouble for something he wasn't supposed to do. I felt guilty once more.
"Brooks, you don't have to apologize," I responded, "I should be the one-"
"No, Selena, you don't have to apologize for anything. I fucked up big time today" Brooks admitted interrupting my statement.
"Because of me, you got sent to the principal's office for a fight you weren't even in. Then I totally blew you off when you asked if I was okay, which by the way, yes I'm fine" he added with a shy grin. I couldn't help but break a slight smile as I listened to him go on.
"Also, not to mention I just stood there like an idiot while Madison made you feel like shit" Brooks exclaimed shaking his head in anger. His hands continued to fidget at his sides.
"I think that's what I'm sorry for the most. I never want you to feel like I don't care when others hurt you," he expressed meeting my eyes.
Warmness crept into my chest at his words.
"Because I do" Brooks finished.
