"to look at you religiously, cause nothing even matters"
- nothing even matters, lauryn hill ft. d'angeloI just stood there and watched her drive away. I just stood there as Madison made fun of her. I just stood there.
What the fuck is wrong with me?
I watch as the taillights of Mrs. Moore's Buick fade from view of the school parking lot. My fingernails now digging into my palms, creating fists. I try to tell myself that it's not my place to always have to defend her. But today I just can't help it with Selena.
Trying to save myself from any further guilt, I headed to my truck as quickly as I could. My hands search in my pockets for the keys as Madison jumps in front of me.
"Brooks, baby, why do you look so upset?" she asked as if she'd forgotten everything that just happened five minutes ago. Although, the swelling on her jaw from Selena's punch stands as a lasting reminder.
Just as she reaches out for me, I push both her arms aside.
"You're in my way, Madison. And stop calling me baby, we've been over for a long time" I stated. Her jaw dropped in the offense as she watched me continue to walk to my truck.
"No, we're not, not until I say!" Madison blurted as she held her jaw. Maya and the rest of 'our' crowd stood by as I ignored her and began flipping her off.
"Yeah we are, is it clear enough now?" I yelled back as I got in my driver's seat. My hand stayed outside the window as I pulled out of the parking lot. In the rearview mirror, my eyes see a fuming Madison but I could give zero fucks right about now.
All I had my mind on was trying to get home fast enough to try to catch Selena outside of her house. I needed to apologize for everything that happened today. Starting with my own fight and also for not stepping in with hers. I still feel like a dick for brushing her off when she asked if I was ok. I don't even know why I did it.
I'm always fucking everything up one way or another.
Within a few minutes, I arrive at my house and pull into the driveway. As I get out I look across the street and up to where Selena's room is on the second floor. No lights are on indicating that she's not there. I look to the Moores' driveway and see that no cars are there as well.
Great, she's not home yet.
I run into my house but before I can get up the stairs to my room I hear my name being called.
"Brooks, is that you?" my dad's voice calls from the dining room. My head drops in disappointment as I respond.
"Yeah, it's me Dad" I reply making my way to him.
As I step into the room I see him and an older man in a suit and tie sitting around the dining table. The man had wrinkled tan skin, dark brown eyes, and peppery gray hair that grew a little past his ears. He had a look on his face that showed whatever he wanted in this moment from me, he was gonna try hard as hell to get it. Leave it to Carson Conway to bring those kinds of people into the house.
