Chapter 3: Luna
Orora West Secondary College used to be my safe haven but lately, things have been different. For a start, a strange boy obsessed with wolves has been following me around since yesterday. He started sitting next to me in class and asking me a range of questions. He also keeps acting like we're best friends who have known each other for a lifetime... I can't tell if he's sincere or if he's just messing with me. He seems nice but I think he might be mocking me.
Yesterday, in third period he told me that he thought Luna was a cool name for a wolf... I'm not sure if it was a compliment or an insult. I know I have the same class first thing this morning. Even though it is only the second day of school I was already overwhelmed by his presence. I briefly thought about moving seats to confuse and maybe avoid him but I always sit at the front of the class so I can get the utmost out of every lesson. Academic success is very important to me.
As I thought, the new guy walks right up to me and sits down at my table. I think his name is Alec. He smiles brightly as he sets his stuff down beside me and leans in close to whisper.
"Luna, do you know who the other wolf in Orora is?" he asks me, his face switching to an unusually serious expression.
"Alec, there are no wolves in Orora West, they aren't native to the area," I inform him.
He stares at me confused for a few seconds and narrows his eyes as he tilts his head to the side and inspects my face. I lean back. Alec might just be crazy.
"Right, right, silly me," he corrects himself, plastering a smile on his face, but he looks stressed, "I meant to say in Aurora, it's a mythical place in a story I was reading, I thought you might have read it, excuse me for a moment."
He up and leaves the class and I stare at him bewildered. The teacher calls his name, but he simply turns his head to smile at the teacher before giving him a small wave goodbye."
As I watch him sprint off I thought I saw a glimpse of panic in his eyes.
I raise my hand to speak to the teacher. I'm not about to break the school rules like the strange new boy.
"You may speak Luna," the teacher says.
"May I be excused, sir? I'd like to check on Alec," I request.
"I think that would be for the best, go ahead," he nods and sends me on my way.
I head down the corridor I saw Alec sprint down and look around in every direction as I try to figure out which way he may have gone. He might be strange, but I was genuinely worried about him. I'm not sure what it was I said that upset him, but he was definitely upset when he ran off. Was it possible that I had brushed him off on a serious manner?
Had he seen a wolf-like creature here? If so, what did he mean by other wolves? Was there more than one? Were there stray dogs outside Alec's house? Is he going to be okay? Is he in danger?
I was about to call out for him when I heard his voice.
"Jax, you don't understand," he told someone in a panicked voice.
"Of course, I don't understand you, Alec, you're talking way too fast," a male voice, presumably Jax scolds him softly.
"Luna doesn't know," he says slowly.
"No one expects her to know who the other wolf is, Alec," he says calmingly.
"Jax, Luna doesn't know that she is a werewolf," Alec says putting heavy emphasis on the word she.
Werewolf? Does Alec think there is a werewolf in Orora Forest? I was right, he is crazy. I should leave.
Wait...
