Chapter 4: Kai

Alec is starting to become somewhat problematic. Like Jax, Alec doesn't think things all the way through. He should have known better than to be openly talking about werewolves on school grounds, and revealing his identity and Jax's? That is completely reckless! A hunter could have overheard them. We don't even know if Luna can be trusted yet and now, she knows our most dangerous secret, this could get us all killed. Worse still if there is no Alpha suppressing Luna's powers then someone is poisoning her, someone she trusts. We could get caught up in a real mess. I know the others think I'm being overprotective and overbearing but I've seen this before. Hunters are human, they are emotional and irrational. They murder an entire pack without mercy and then they stumble across a small baby that looks so harmless and human. So, they keep it. Luna never has the scent of another wolf on her, so I seriously doubt that she lives with other werewolves. I'd bet everything I owned that her real parents are dead and that the hunters kept Luna as their own.

That would be even more problematic than Alec spilling secrets wherever he goes. If the people she thinks are her parents are hunters, they'll likely kill her if she doesn't discover that she's a werewolf. Alec just had to open his big mouth and tell Luna that she's a werewolf too. Now I'm either going to have to explain to her why she can't talk to her parents about this, or I'm going to have to convince her this is all one huge misunderstanding. I can't believe Alec was stupid enough to tell Luna the people who raised her might be poisoning her with a cup of tea every night. For a Delta, he has no tact.

Now that I think about it, there's another issue that's been on my mind. Alec clearly feels guilty about whatever happened to his pack and I'm beginning to wonder if Alec is qualified to be a Delta or if he was simply born into it. Different packs have different structures, and some revolve around status instead of skill. If Alec did in fact get his pack slaughtered, I'll have to make sure that same thing doesn't happen to us. Alec appears to be very sentimental. Even though he has warmed up to the idea of living with us over the past few weeks every now and then I see something that worries me. Alec is very submissive, more so than other werewolves and his personality seems to revolve around the person he is standing next to. He's heavily influenced by the environment he is in. Something about the way Alec acts isn't right. It's like he's afraid of us, he acts like he's being forced to fit in. I don't think he has an evil bone in his body, but something tells me he might have a dangerous past that could come back to haunt him... and us. Perhaps someone from the past. Consequently, this would affect the whole pack.

Speaking of the pack, if Luna really is alone and living with hunters I should, in theory, protect her, but she hasn't been raised by werewolves. I don't think she would accept pack life. I doubt that she wants to talk to me, let alone take orders from me. I just know that today is going to be a long and exhausting day. We've been in this town for a week at most, and today is only the third day of school, how could we have screwed up so badly in such a short time.

I decide to leave my motorbike in the garage and walk to school with Jax and Alec, I know this will be my only chance to talk to the two of them. We had barely made it down the road when Alec suddenly stops dead in his tracks.

"What's wrong?" Jax asks him.

"I can smell him," he answers shortly.

"Smell who?" I ask him frustrated, nothing he says is making sense.

Alec looks at me with wide and frightened eyes and takes a step behind Jax. I realise I had spoken aggressively. The stress is getting to me. I try again, softly this time.

"Who can you smell, Alec?" I ask more gently.

"We forgot to tell you," Alec starts hesitantly.

This is what I mean when I say I'm worried about Alec, he can be so bright and happy, but if you raise your voice or he thinks he's doing something wrong he reacts strongly with fear. I can smell it coming off him in waves. What happened to him?
