Chapter 6: Alec

I wake up to the sound of quiet knocking on my door.

"Can I come in?" Kai asks me.

"Of course," I say.

I sit up a bit when Kai opens the door and comes in.

"How are you doing," Kai asks me.

"Honestly, I couldn't tell you," I tell him, "I've been asleep this whole time... speaking of which, how long have I been out?"

"About an hour," Kai tells me, "Can you move your toes?"

"Do I have to try?" I ask him, remembering the pain of having Jax touch one of them early.

"Yes," Kai says firmly, "I need to know how bad the damage is."

I take a deep breath and wiggle one of my toes. The pain from moving my leg even just a little bit is excruciating. I try not to react but can't stop myself from scrunching up my face and making a weird, muffled noise.

"That's good," Kai says.

Kai pauses for a second.

"I wanted to talk to you about the new guy and Luna," Kai says.

"Yeah, sure, what's up?" I ask him.

"Your skills are used to coordinate peace treaties and communicate with wolves outside of your pack, right?" he confirms.

"Yep, that's what a Delta does," I confirm.

"I want you to convince Luna and the new guy to become official members of the pack," Kai informs me.

"Didn't the new guy already do that?" I ask him.

"Sort of," Kai says, "but he didn't know what he was doing, he was raised by a human."

"His mother or father?" I ask.

"Mother," Kai says.

"The father didn't stick around?" I ask him.

"No," Kai says, "he says he's never met his dad."

"Does his mum... know?" I ask him.

"Not that we are aware of," Kai says.

Leaving a werewolf child in the care of a human who had no idea about the identity of the father or child is disgraceful. Kai is right to want to offer him a chance to understand the impact of his decision and the importance of it in our culture, but before I agree to do so I want to make sure Kai is doing this for the right reasons.

"Why do you want them in the pack?" I ask Kai.

"It will be easier for me to protect them if they join the pack," Kai says, "and honestly, I want them to have a chance to experience what it means to be a werewolf... we aren't the monsters Luna's parents believe us to be and the two of them have missed out on... everything."

It is clear to me that our culture is very important to Kai. He knows the old stories and the significance of joining a pack.

"I can try," I tell him, "it might be a challenge. Luna doesn't seem to like you very much and the other one... well he's a guy and he's never been in a pack before... they're both going to be strong-willed. For a lack of better words, that male wolf is practically a rouge. He grew up alone and ostracized from his culture, you can take the time to teach him and but whether he wants to learn or not is up to him. He likely won't back down as easily as Jax when he disagrees with you. Luna is going to be even harder; she's only just had her first transformation; she won't even have the natural instincts to obey you as the other one does. Not yet at least. She isn't connected with her wolf self like the male is."
