Chapter 10: Jake
I've never been more relieved to wake up and realize it's a Saturday morning. After last night, I'm not sure any of us could handle another day of school. I grab my phone from the floor next to me and check the time. It's only seven am. I want to go back to sleep but I can't. Every time I close my eyes I remember sinking my teeth into those men and tearing them apart. I'd never seen so much blood in my life and the worst part is when it was happening it didn't bother me at all. Even now, I don't feel any regret per se, just... disgust. When it comes down to them or Jax, their lives seem so insignificant to me and I find the profoundly disturbing.
Needing to take my mind off it I open a fun but pointless app on my phone and start playing.
"Jake... what are you doing?" I hear Kai ask me.
He rolls over on his bed to lean over the edge to take a look for himself.
"Playing games on my phone," I answer him without looking up from my game.
"It's like... seven am," he groans.
"I know, but I can't fall back asleep," I tell him.
Kai shrugs and rolls back over to face the wall and I keep playing. After a couple of minutes, Kai sighs and rolls over to face me again.
"Did you... need to talk about it?" he asks me.
"I... don't know," I say hesitantly.
Kai nods. He gets out of bed and gestures for me to follow him. He wakes up Alec and Jax by knocking on their door.
"Loungeroom, now," he says.
He knocks on Luna's door next. When she opens the door, she stares right through us. Her hair is a mess and she looks like she's been punched in both eyes. She's even paler than usual.
"What?" she says finally looking up to meet Kai's eyes.
Kai is silent for a moment.
"You definitely need to talk," Kai says, pointing to the lounge room.
Luna walks to the loungeroom and sits on the couch. Kai sits in his usual armchair, and I stand awkwardly in the corner, unsure what to do with myself. Jax and Alec join us shortly after, Alec using his crutches to get to the couch. Jax follows closely behind him. Alec does a double take when he looks at Luna, clearly taken aback by the state she is in.
"Why are we up at seven am?" Jax asks, rubbing his eyes, "it's a Saturday, and yesterday was... tiring."
"We're here because we all need to talk about yesterday," Kai says, "because none of you are coping with it well."
"What about me?" Alec says, "I wasn't even there yesterday."
"You're here because you are the Delta and talking to people is literally your job," Kai points out.
"You're... you're going to let me help?" Alec says, pointing at himself.
"I'm counting on you to help," Kai says.
Alec smiles, practically beaming with pride.
"How about we start with..." Kai says as he looks around the room, "Alec, where should we start?"
"Who wants to talk about last night?" Alec asks.
No one answers him.
"Okay," Alec says, "why don't you guys tell me why you don't want to talk about last night?"
"Are you kidding me?!" Luna shouts, "I killed a man with my teeth! And that woman... oh my goodness that woman, I... I ripped..."
Luna starts dry retching and covers her mouth. Kai pats her back with a confused look on his face.
