Chapter 8: Kai

I'm beginning to think I might be stupid. Every time I try to talk to Luna, we end up arguing. She gets on my last nerve faster than Jax, and he's my annoying little brother. But, Alec is right, Luna is acting odd. I want to say she's being unreasonable, blame it on her, and give up, but that is not what an Alpha is supposed to do. If I did give up now, Luna might never become a member of the pack.

I might have a theory about Luna's behaviour, but I can't be sure yet... and I don't have time to dwell on it. The hunters have been filling the forest with more and more traps. It's obvious they've figured out there is more than one werewolf in Orora West. I want to believe Luna's parents - who I found out are named Rose and John Farlan, won't kill Luna since they raised her, but I have my doubts. After getting their names from the lovely administration lady, Nora. She was more than happy to tell me everything I wanted to know; I got the vibe that she might be a bit of a gossip. From what she's heard, and seen herself, Luna's parents aren't the nicest people, and their family is a bit 'odd' as she put it.

I wanted to do more digging, so I asked a guy in my class yesterday. He told me not to bother with her and that she never goes anywhere because her parents never let her. Apparently, he's known her since kindergarten, and she's never been allowed to do anything besides go to school and study at the library.

I came to my own conclusion; Rose and John Farlan never planned on allowing Luna to leave. The constant poisoning and the way they ostracised Luna from her peers leads me to believe they want Luna to be weak, fragile and completely alone. They weren't raising her; they were controlling her.

The excessive use of lethal traps in the forest is a clear sign that her parents have overestimated the size of our pack, but are aware that there is one in the area. They clearly do not know our identities, but Luna's change in behaviour and sudden decision to move out might cause them to become suspicious of her. We have to get them to trust us and to think that her running away is unrelated.

Frustrated and at a complete loss for what to do I run my hands through my hair before unceremoniously tilting forward and letting my head hit the wall. I stand there for a while, head against the wall, staring at the floor beneath my feet and contemplating my own stupidity.

"Kai, what are you doing?"

I turn around awkwardly and come face to face with Luna.

"How did you get here so fast?" I ask her.

"Answer my question first," she demands.

"I..." I hesitate.

I was doubting myself? I was freaking out? I was realising I'm not doing a great job of being the leader?

I can't say any of those things.

"I was trying to think of a way to get your parents to send you away so that they won't be suspicious of you not going back home," I tell her.

Which isn't entirely a lie.

"Okay... but why was your face planted against the wall?" Luna asks me, she looks amused.

"Because I can't think of anything," I admit.

"Why don't we just... talk to them?" Luna suggests.

"What?"

"They're always pretty angry," Luna says, "it won't be hard to provoke them into kicking me out."

She might be right, while they were unable to bring themselves to kill her when she was a child that does not mean they have any kind of emotional attachment to her.
