My small chiming alarm sounded from my table, and I slammed my hand on it, annoyed it halted my dream. I put on my clothes and pulled open my door.

My dad was up to his usual breakfast routine, cutting his toast neatly with a butter knife and fork and dipping it into his baked beans, that had always disgusted me. He was listening to orange colored sky, without headphones as usual.

My sister stormed out of her room, and angrily spoke.

Y/S: Dad! This is my one day off from work and you woke me up! I've had to wake up at 5am every day this week for school as well

Dad: don't give me lip, violet.

Violet sighed, before going back into her room.

Dad: youngsters nowadays, so rude.

I chuckled to myself in my head, typical dad-violet interaction.

Mum walked in, smiling brightly at dad.

Dad: give us a kiss sweetie!

Mum walked to the counter and  leaned over, pecking dad on the head.

Me: Gross!

Mum: don't talk like that Y/N! You'll think you're silly when  you meet a nice girl at school! You little Heartbreakers!

I looked at my watch, it was time for the ride to school.

Me: oh! It's getting late, I gotta go

Mum: make sure you've got your wallet on you, you don't wanna forget lunch like yesterday

Me: ok ok.

I pulled open the door, closing it and looking out to see if it was close yet. I  sighed softly, happy I wasn't late again.

I hopped on my bike, and just as I began to move, a car slammed into the street at top speed, it colided with a SUV that belonged to the marshes, must have been their daughter being driven to school by their babysitter. I sprinted towards the crash, to see a girl my age crawling out of it, that must have been their daughter

I sprinted forward still, completely abandoning my bike st my house. I knelt down to check own the girl who was still on the floor getting up, and the only reason I knew something was seriously wrong is when my parents screamed st the house.

I spun around to see what was happening, and an old man in his 60s was shambling towards me. His eyes were milky and white, his head split in two, revealing the brain inside. He groaned in small bursts of agony, or something comparable.

My dad couldn't even reach the end of the driveway before he was on me. It was like the geezer was trying to eat me. He pushed me onto the ground, and as my skull hit the asphalt I heard a skin crawling crunch, and then I just saw everything become black.

1 hour later

I woke up to see I was inside some kind of building, not my house though.

I lifted myself up, and looked around me, I was next to a kitchen, and infront of a sliding door, I looked outside, and saw a small pool and tree house propped on a tree. I tilted my head to see if someone was in there, and to my surprise, someone was!

A girl opened the flapping door to the tree house, and gestured at a walkie talkie in her hand, I noticed one crackling static on the floor, and picked it up.

Girl: There's one in there, come up to me

Me: Them? What do you mean them?

She sighed quietly and picked up

Girl: I'll explain just come here, seriously

I hesitated, taking one more look before I stepped out into the tree house before climbing up the step ladder.  I pushed open the flap, and crawled inside.

Me: what are them?

Girl: I can't tell you for sure, but it's like some kind of sickness, you know the 'flu going around right? It's not a flu, it's make people different

Me: Different? What do you mean by that?

Girl: like my old babysitter on the road, aggressive you could say

Me: Then why did you leave me with one in there!?

Girl: I didn't know there was one in there until you woke up, I saw my friends hand poking out of a fallen bookcase in the living room, how did you not notice that?

Me: ok, ok sorry- wait your friend? What happened? Are you o-

She covered my mouth with her palm and gestured downward, a tall man who looked to be in his late thirties limping around, seemingly confused

Girl:(whispering) he might be one of them

I nodded slowly, and then he began to yell

Man: IS ANYONE THERE? HELLO?

I tried to reach out the door, but she stopped me, I pushed through and whisper yelled to him

Me:up here!

He looked up and saw me there, his face was distressed, not crazy

The girl glared at me, and I shrugged before climbing down to him. The girl watched me carefully from above

Me: are you ok?

I gestured to his leg, that I could now see was bloody

Man: car crash, I'll be fine, what's your name boy?

Me: Y/N, you?

Man: Lee. We should get going, it's getting dark.

Me: Wait.

I turned to the treehouse

Me: He's cool! You can come down!

The girl came down, and Lee chuckled.

Me: What's your name by the way?

Girl: Clementine, but call me Clem please, let's get going, Y/N

A/N:  well that was my first chapter! 912 words. Thanks for reading guys, and I just wanted to dedicate this last bit to one of my favorite singers, Jimmy Goodwin. He's the singer and bassist for my favorite band, doves, and he recent had to cancel a tour due to mental health images, I hope he has a good recovery, and that this isn't it for doves 💙
