Nothing was ever the same after that summer.

How could it? Given that the whole "Hackett's Quarry nightmare" forced you to face your worst nightmare, how could you feel normal after it?

Luckily, you were stuck with your two best friends, Laura and Max, for the rest of the year. Due to a near-death experience, Max was accepted into the same college as you and Laura, giving you the greatest time with your best friends.

However, the festering wound left on your heart would linger in the back of your mind during those fun times, never letting you enjoy it. You had tried to push away the thoughts, but you just couldn't get it, or him, out of your head.

Yes, you had an awful crush on Max Brinly.

You tried your hardest to not make it obvious, but how could you not? You were absolutely smitten by his lovable smile and you adored his enchanting green eyes. Not to mention his personality was everything you wanted in a guy.

But, damn, it hurt to see him happier with someone else.

"Y/N--!" Laura drew out the last syllable of your name as she shut entered the apartment you three shared, "where are you?"

"In my room!" you yelled out, hoping she wouldn't bother you. The papers piling onto your desk was enough trouble for you already.

But life isn't easy.

"Hey," Laura swung on the door frame, popping her head in your room, "you ready for tonight?"

"Tonight?" What in the world was she talking about?

"Yeah?" her whole body could be seen in the frame now, "do you not remember?"

"Uhh-- catch me up to speed? Sorry, school's been a hassle."

"The party! With some of our friends?"

"Oh!" you nodded, "right, right."

"Good 'cuz you are not wearing that to the party," she pointed to the clothes you had been wearing for a couple days straight.

"Of course," you shrugged, "although this option is much comfier."

"Y/N--" she strung your name out again.

"I got it, I got it! No casual clothes," a small smile made its way onto your face, "you got it, boss."

"Thanks, Y/N," her grin grew as she left your room.

You decided to throw on a nicer outfit, putting on your favorite shoes and adding some additional accessories. You looked.. amazing. And clearly someone noticed that, too.

"Hey, Y/N," Max leaned against your door frame and smiled.

You spun around and gave a grin, "Max! Hi." What do I say?

"Wow," his eyes widened, "you look-- just wow."

"Just.. wow?" you cocked your head as your grin lightly became a smirk.
