You genuinely felt bad for the guy.

You knew exactly how the whole relationship would end. Dating Emma was a mistake— you knew it from the start. Sure, you'd show hopefulness because maybe— just maybe— it would all work out for him.

That night proved otherwise.

"I think you should find Abi," Emma sighed, "and I'll go find Jacob."

"I can go see him," you stood up from your seat, avoiding a worrying glance from Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn was a childhood friend to Jacob. Their relationship made you laugh with their sarcastic banter and "great" advice to each other. You had hoped that maybe you could find a friendship as fun as theirs.

Kaitlyn was a wonderful friend to you; her firm knowledge knew no bounds. She knew the right things to say to you at all times, whether you liked it or not.

And— despite your "attempt" at hiding it— she knew you liked Jacob.

That's why her worried glance and hand gripping your wrist pulled you down. She knew that Emma needed to talk to Jacob to cool him down.

So why did you feel the need to see him?

"Uhm," Emma stood up, "why should you go and see him?"

You immediately felt embarrassed. Dylan sipped his beer with nervousness as Ryan pursed his lips. Kaitlyn sighed.

"I think what he needs right now is not the person who— uh—" you paused and took a breath, "hurt him."

Emma scoffed, "and you think you can do better in talking to him?"

"I wasn't the one who kissed his best friend right in front of him," your words stung, although you didn't mean it to hurt. You said the truth and immediately felt regret for saying something hurtful to her.

Her eyes widened and she sat herself down. She crossed her arms with a smug look on her face.

"Okay then," her tone was bitter, "go on and find him. Since you think I'm not the one he should be seeing."

"I will," Kaitlyn removed her hand as you stood yourself up, "please be safe."

You walked off, feeling Emma's eyes stare daggers into your back.

Shit. Shit. Shit. What am I doing?

Uneasy thoughts flooded your senses. You felt ashamed. Embarrassed. Annoyed.

Maybe it would've been better if Emma was the one to see Jacob. Maybe they would've reconciled and been back together.

No.

You trekked on, trying to figure out where Jacob could've possibly ran off to.

The cabins? No, that would've made him sad with the carved tree. The lodge? No, it's too dark in there and too many memories. The island? No, too far.
