Hawkins High - 7:30 AM - Monday

Will's POV

Will put his last book in his locker and slammed it shut. He stared at the red metal of the locker, thinking to himself, maybe this year will be different. Maybe I'll become popular. Maybe I'll become friends with Lucas and Mike. Maybe I'll get a girlfriend.

His shook his head at the last part. He never liked the idea of getting a girlfriend. It always felt weird to him. He shrugged away the feeling as he heard footsteps approaching. He had arrived earlier than most, so the halls were still pretty empty.

"Well, well, what do we have here? Little Will Byers, still wearing whatever shit your mommy bought you?" Troy laughed at his own joke and shoved Will, slamming him against the locker. "Do me a favor, weirdo, and get out of the way of my locker." 

Will nodded his head and pushed past Troy, making his way to Dustin's locker. Will and Dustin had been best friends since 4th grade. Will missed those days, when nobody shoved him around or bullied him. When nobody cared about what he wore, or how he acted. He could just be himself. But those days were gone. He had to act like someone else at school, like someone that was unbothered by bullying.

"Hey Will! Wanna bike to my house after school? I got a new comic you've gotta see!" Dustin faced his friend, smiling widely. Will nodded to Dustin instead of giving him a verbal response. The halls were getting crowded, so Dustin probably wouldn't have heard him either way. 

Will heard a shout from near his locker. He turned around to see Mike Wheeler, the coolest guy in school, walking through the hall. Will watched as he waved to Troy and nodded to the other popular guys. Mike kept looking around until his gaze finally rested on Will. His smile fell as he studied Will's face. 

Will's eyes widened. His heart beat fast. It was such an honor to even be noticed by mike, the "king" of Hawkins High. Will snapped out of this when Mike looked away, embracing his girlfriend El. Will shook the thoughts out of his head. Mike Probably didn't even know who he was. They just happened to make eye contact, nothing special. But Will found his gaze still on Mike's face as he hugged his girlfriend. He didn't even realize Mike was looking at him again until he finally calmed himself down. He held Mike's gaze, looking into his dark brown eyes.

"Hellooo? Earth to Will? You in there?" Dustin's voice snapped Will out of his trance.

"I- Yeah, sorry, just, uh, tired." Will took a deep breath, feeling his his heart pound in his chest. Dustin continued rambling about comics while Will was still in shock about what had just happened. It couldn't have been an accident. Mike had held eye contact with him twice. It wasn't just a coincidence. The halls were full with sounds of idle chitchat, slamming lockers, and squeaky footsteps on the tiled floors.

The first bell rang and everyone started shuffling to their classes. Will said his goodbyes to Dustin and headed to his first class.
