El's POV

El watched as Mike tapped the nerd's shoulder. She leaned in towards him, trying to hear what he whispered.

"You.... Partner.... project?" Is all El could make out. Was Mike asking Nerd to be his partner? There's no way. Mike and El had already promised to be partners for every project in Mr. Clarke's class, so why would he do this, and since when was he friends with the nerd? Mike had never said anything about having friends other than the usual group- Troy, Lucas, James, and the rest of the basketball team.

El sighed. Maybe she was just overthinking it. Maybe he just forgot about the promise? But they made it just yesterday. No way Mike's memory is THAT bad. Whatever. She could partner with Max, El wanted to be closer with her anyway. She turned around to face Max, who sat right behind her.

"Hey, do you wanna be my partner for the project?" El smiled, trying to look as friendly as possible. Max's eyes widened and the corners of her mouth turned up into a smile.

"Sure, why not." Max nodded and looked back down at the planning sheet on her desk. El turned back around, still smiling. She looked over at Mike, who was giving her an odd look. She turned away from him so he wouldn't see her rolling her eyes. She had no idea it was possible for a person to be this dense.

Right as El went to grab a pencil from her bag, the bell rang. Students immediately stood up. The sound of chairs and shoes squeaking on the tile floors filled the room as everyone filed out. El stuffed her papers into her backpack and stood up. Mike was next to her desk, messing with his hair.

"Hey Mike, some of the cheer squad and the basketball team are all going to Scoops Ahoy later. Maybe you and I could go together?" She asked as they walked through the crowded halls, making their way to El's locker.

"Sure! Sounds fun. Could I bring a friend?" He asked, leaning against her locker. She sighed inwardly. Why couldn't they just go on ONE date together without Mike dragging Lucas along?? Whatever. She'd just tell him no next time.

"Yeah, I guess, who?" She asked, even though she already knew he was going to say Lucas. At least if Lucas came, he might bring Max.

"You know Will? He sits in front of me in Mr Clarke's class." He smiled at El as she slammed her locker. She was shocked by this- Mike had never mentioned him and the nerd being friends. Why didn't he ever tell her this kind of stuff? He usually told her everything, so why should this be any different?

"Yeah, yeah, that's fine. But maybe next time we could-" She was interrupted by Mike kissing her on the cheek and walking away, mumbling something about going to ask Will. She stood there, dumbfounded, watching her boyfriend turn the corner to go talk to the nerd.

Why did this bother her so much? He'd always plan out double dates with Lucas and Max, and they would always have group hangouts. They hadn't hung out, just the two of them, since sophomore year, but it never bothered her until now. Whatever, she wouldn't let this get her down. She'd go to Scoops Ahoy with everyone and have fun. She could forget about this. She might even get to know Max. Even if Mike only hung out with Will, she still had the entire cheer squad there. She had other friends. Everything would be fine.
